Hi everyone! We got a puppy yesterday who I was told is full blooded Labrador. We got him from a lady who got him for her child but couldn't have large breeds and so needed to re-home him. We were told he's 8 weeks but based on his birthday (which they provided along with his first shots record) then he is 10 weeks tomorrow. But he is pretty small I'd say for that old so I'm just wondering if y'all think he looks to be truly lab, and about that age? I know it can't be for sure from photos but any ideas? Thanks!!

Hi , and welcome ! Difficult to say from the photo, but if he looks like a Lab then its probably because he is one ! They are vary in size , as pups and as adults . Sometimes the smaller pups suddenly start to grow like weeds and catch up, but sometimes they don't . As long as he is happy and healthy , that's all that matters x

Hi Puppymom, welcome to the forum! Well done you for taking on a rescue dog. Poor little chap, so young and already been re-homed...

Here is an excerpt from our forum rules: Requests for confirmation of pedigree/ID Forum members may not post photographs of their dogs for the purpose of asking other members to confirm that their puppy/dog is a pedigree dog.

Actually it would be really difficult to tell from your avatar, but whether he is a full lab or not, he certainly looks very sweet! As Kate says, if he is happy and healthy, that's all that matters. I hope you stick around and tell us more about him.

Thank you both for your reply. The only reason I was curious if there's anything mixed in is to know about his demeanor and the best way to train him (we have a baby and two older kids so I chose him bc he was a nice breed lol I have had bad experiences with certain other types) but I'm sure it's fine since we have him so young:)

You can always buy DNA tests if you're really interested. Wisdom Panel is one option that I've just bought for my mum to use on her rescue.
Labs are a lovely breed, but the puppies can still still very hard work, so don't expect him to be the chilled out archetypal Labrador plodding down the street for a few years (at least!). The best way to train any breed (or species!) is through positive reinforcement protocols.
The Happy Puppy Handbook is a great resource for all new puppy owners and I'd recommend getting Total Recall too, to start your recall training as soon as possible, as this is arguably the most important behaviour you ever teach - it can save your dog's life. Training it from the very early puppy stages makes life a lot easier down the line :)

Hi and welcome. I also recommend the happy puppy book. Have you got baby gates around your house? If not, it would be worth investing in some, especially as you have young children. They can wind each other up and pups can get a bit mouthy and interactions need to be carefully managed.
