Hi!! I’m having someone install an automatic doggie door tomorrow morning and I need to know how tall are labs from the chest height or their length of their legs . Mine is still a pup so I’m not sure how high the doggie door would be, Thanks so much for your help!!
Gosh, there is a huge variety in size of labs, it's tricky to know how big your pup will grow. You could try going on the height of the parents, but even that won't really tell you how tall yours will be - just give you a ball park figure.
In the UK, the breed standard height to the withers is 57–62 cm for a male and 55–60 cm for a female. However, as Sue says, there is a huge variation in size between different Labs. Field-bred Labs are often (not always) taller and pet bred Labs can be monsters. The best bet is to look at the parents and use that as some approximation of your pup's finished size. Show-bred Labs will generally have a leg-to-body ratio of about 50:50 whereas field bred Labs will often have longer legs, proportionally speaking. It really is "how long is a piece of string?".
The door doesn't have to be as tall as the dog. Cooper is a big girl, 24" at the withers, but our dog door is only 17" high. The top of the door is 21-1/2" from the floor. She can go through it on a run. Our door is installed in a wall, and in the winter we put a second door in. It is in a structure that looks like a dog house and fits tight against the house. Makes sort of an air lock to cut down on the breeze into the house. We take it down in the summer, because it takes up space on our deck.
Has the UK Height Standard changed? That looks the same as the USA standard. I thought the UK standard was a little shorter.
