Hi everyone - only my second post but been reading lots of yours! Ava is coming up to 8 months and doing well. She is small for the breed I thinkgot her weighed today 16kg. She has put on 1kg in 3 weeks the vet said this was a lot and that I need to watch her weight. Still got a waist and looking good. I know every puppy varies but would be good to get your views on is 1kg in 3 weeks too much?
    Thanks

If she has a good waist from the side and above I wouldn’t worry.

Here is a useful chart :)

I’d follow your vet’s advice on weight gain.

But my understanding was that it’s 1/2-1 kg per week from 2 months till 10 months.

That's good to know so 1kg in 3 weeks isn't too bad?

As I said, best to follow your vet’s advice - your vet has seen her, I haven’t!

But I recall (vaguely!) when our boy was a pup that we were to expect 1 kg gain per week during the growth spurt. Having said that, I also recall the trainer at puppy class saying he was too fat! *gasp!*

It is hard not to get obsessed with their weight. It is much easier to increase their food than to start deducting from the amount that they have come to expect. My vet says 1kg per week for Caspar, but he has not put on as much in the last 2 weeks so I have increased his food. I'm not quite sure at what age they should stop gaining. Is you dog just small for breed or is she underweight? 16kg at 8 months seems tiny, so I am assuming that she is working style, though she is not fully grown. I wouldn't worry too much unless you struggle to feel her ribs.

Yes she is small for the breed, especially when you look at what other pups of the same age weigh. Her mum was small too and gun dog style.
    Thanks for the reassurance!

I have had to increase my pup's food as he was borderline underweight - all because I worry so much about letting him get too heavy and this putting pressure on his joints. He didn't complain, though!

My girl gained weight steadily at around 0.5kg per week give it take the odd few grams and her weight weight fain slowed at aroubd 8/9 months old. I wouldn't be too concerned about the 1kg in 3 weeks but keep a regular check on her weight and body condition as you don't want her to put on weight that doesn't correlate with growth.

My boy is 8 months and he weighs 21.5kg but he is definitely a good weight (not too fat or too thin)

Currently he's putting on about 0.5kg a week so 1kg in 3 weeks in a smaller dog sounds just right.

I'm sure your girl is perfect

That's me! Worrying about her putting on too much weight. Obviously she's not underweight according to the vet but will do my best to keep her just right. Thanks for the reply

I think she is but of course I'm biased! 21.5 is a lot more than Ava but she is tiny. People think she is younger than she is because of her size. Thanks for sharing and the reassurance Your boy sounds perfect too
