Has anyone else experienced a side effect of hyperactivity when their lab puppy was on de-wormer meds? This has happened to our 13-week old Kona on both Panacur and Drontal Plus. Luckily today was the last dose of Drontal Plus and I hoped it cleared up her worms and we don't need to put her on these again! She was like a completely different dog - nonstop barking and whining, extremely hyper, running around like crazy, and nothing would settle her down. Our vet told us he's never heard of this happening but it happened to her all 4 days she was on these two types of meds! I hope there is another option if we ever need to put her on a de-wormer again.

We had Vanilla on the the 'Drontal' when we first got her. That for her standard monthly tablet. She went mental, first time we thought it was due to a couple of other things that happened. Second time we figured it out it was due to 'Drontal'. It was not a pleasant experience as her heart was racing etc. Our vet had never heard of any issues either. But my friend google said otherwise.
We now have her on 'Milbemax', no issues.
I think like with all medication (both animal or human) there are side effects, but everybody experiences them differently.

Oh yes! We had this with Drontal when Jura was a pup, used to refer to it as Drontal madness day! She is now almost 2 yrs and gradually as she got older the reaction to drontal reduced. The combination of the reduced reaction and vets advice meant that we persevered with Drontal and when I wormed her the other day and there was no reaction to it at all.

Yep, Ella was the same on Drontal! The poor little puppy (we'd only had her a few weeks at the time) didn't settle or sleep for hours. It was horrible and exhausting. I actually remember climbing onto the dining table at one point, just to get away from her :eek:

Goodness, I didn't realise this was a thing! Xena had two treatments of Drontal when she was between 3-6 months and I can't say I noticed anything different about her. I now just get the Virbac wormer straight from the receptionist at the clinic - it's liver-flavoured so goes down a treat, whereas I had to disguise the Drontal in a coating of sardines.

Snowie reacted very badly to Milbemax. Allergic reaction one hour after taking - extremely itchy, ears and eyes swollen. Seizure a few hours later.

Fortunately he seems fine on Mediworm.

They're all poisons designed to kill intestinal parasites so there can be terrible side effects for your dog. We slightly under-dose because of Snowie's bad reactions to such toxic meds, but he is on a 3-4-month deworming schedule as he did have a tapeworm infestation as a puppy.

Speak to your vet about correct dosing for your dog and if there is another drug for her. There are two issues I have read about: type of drug that can breach the blood-brain barrier in Collies and susceptible dogs; and when the worms are killed, they give off a substance in the bloodstream that can cause bad side effects. These are written in the drug fact sheets and are available online.

Chiming in on our second round of Drontal Plus and this one is just as bad as the first. Devil child hyper, barking, inconsolable, cannot sit still, deviant, thirsty and will not stop moving. Now we expect some of this from any puppy, but this has to be a reaction to the Drontal or the activity of the probably strong poison and the worms. The first time we gave it to her we had to go on a 10-hour car drive and it was 9.39 terrible hours of nonstop and piercing barking and nothing helped. It caught us by surprise both times, but after reading this and other threads, I will seek other drugs. Worms are part of most puppies’ childhood, but this scares me that it may have dangerous effects on her short or Long-term. But I’m happy I found this great forum. Here’s to no sleep.

I had this with maisy with her first (and last) dose of drontal. I rang the vet and they said it was common with Drontal. Am now using Nexgard with Milbemax and all is fine so far.

Nibbler was on panacur when he had giardia as a puppy and yes he went totally mental.

Alternatively you can ask your vet to test for worms - take in a fresh poo sample and ask for a fecal flotation test. If it tests positive then you can treat with meds. This way you don’t treat unnecessarily.

As a follow up, my puppy did end up needing a third round of meds (several months ago). The only option left that the vet had not tried yet was Metronidazole - thankfully those did not have the same hyper effect on her!

A vet will normally advise a regular worming regime to ensure that your pup stays healthy. Worming is often on a monthly basis until 6 months of age and then moves on to a 3 monthly schedule. I've never used Drontal as my original vet recommended Milbemax which we used with no problems and now use Milpro which is similar to Milbemax, just from another company

    Hi,
we just got a 8 week old puppy and gave her her first dose of Panacur for positive stool for round worms. She got it this morning and by 9 am she was crazy! She's been crazy all day. Barking, whining, pacing, attacking for food. Please tell me this behavior isn't permanent. She was a totally calm dog yesterday!! I want my Lucy back!! This is insane!!!

Yes my pups heart is racing and she is manic in behavior. She went from no accidents in the house to peeing every 5 minutes. This is crazy! So I am stopping this Panacur and heading to the store to get some foods that are good for killing worms and for gut health.

Please consult with your vet. Dewormers are an important part of good health for your pup. Many young pups have worms, and if they are not treated your pup can become very ill. There may be another treatment that the vet can give your pup that will not cause the same reaction. I am unaware of any food that can eliminate worms in dogs.

My dog went back to normal once the meds wore off. Definitely contact your vet and ask to be switched to a different medication. My dog finally responded well to the third medication we tried.

My breeder specifically said not to use Panacur with my puppy. I had no intention of using this anyway, so didn't look into it, but I'd definitely advise changing to a different dewormer if you've had any effects from the one you're using. It's important you use an effective wormer for your puppy's health, so please do consult with your vet rather than just buying foods that promote good gut health.

Last month, as some of you may have read, Gaston was dewormed using a Virbac dewormer tablet. He was really hyper and mean, going quite mad, snapping and barking. This time the vet gave us a Cazitel Plus dewormer and he was dewormed yesterday ( a tablet and a half) and it was the same thing..Gaston was acting really mad for at least an hour, hour and a half.
This just seems so strange, dont remember going through any of this before with any of my previous dogs. Maybe the dewormers were different, maybe there is component..it's just odd.

Sounds like it’s really affecting him. Ask your vet if you can rather test for worms, and then based on the results decide whether to use a dewormer. Usually they do a fecal flotation test to find worm eggs.
