Great news! I tried a couple of shampoos in the shampoo aisle that contained iodine or chlorohexidine. Nothing worked as well as the expensive antifungal shampoo I bought at the vet! Yesterday I bought a betadine (povidone-iodine) rinse from the pharmacy - plan to use it on my boy’s itchy spots. Haven’t done so yet, but it’s highly recommended on a fb group I belong to.
I just researched Betadine, it seems like it could help Milo a lot in his problem areas at an affordable price. How do you plan on using it if you don't mind me asking. Do you dilute it at all?
It's so great to hear Milo is better. It must have been horrible for him and stressful (and expensive) for you. One of the labs I grew up with had a skin condition (mange) for most of her life and we had to bath her regularly and use hibiscrub, although the condition never disappeared. One night when my folks were away I allowed her to come upstairs and sleep with me and she spent the whole night licking and scratching herself, poor girl, I realised then how awful it was for her.
Hibiscrub is chlorohexidine, right? It’s marketed here as Bioscrub. It’s used in hospitals to disinfect hands. That scratching and licking all night - just awful! My boy has been there. We had to give him steroids then to give him relief. Last night he insisted on swimming in the pond at 3.30am cos he was so hot, the heat makes him itchy. It’s very hot here. After the cool swim we all finally got some sleep.
I’ll use it this weekend and give you details! I believe you make up a dilute solution and put it on the itchy spots, no rinsing.
I'm really sorry to hear about your pup. It really is awful. One day I woke-up with Milo in my bed and he chewed through his fur and his skin to the point he was bleeding. Was a horrible feeling knowing he was suffering. I'm so glad he's doing better. It drained my savings account but no amount of money could replacement my emotional support dog and best-friend. I'm sure your lab loved you with all it's heart for helping ease the symptoms.
I hope it works for your pup. I've been using Sogeval Douxo pads to soothe his problem areas, it's helped some but I feel there is better alternatives. Hopefully Betadine works well for you two!
Hey everyone. First of all Milo is doing better , He's been suffering with really dry, itchy and dandruff filled skin. I bought him some Zesty paw salmon oil to try to help his skin, with addition to his shampoo and a earthbath conditioner. Is there anything else we can try to help his dried skin and dandruff? Is there any quality spray on style conditioner that I can apply while he's in between baths? It seems to come back 1-2 days after his bath. I'm hoping there is something out there to sooth his skin either topically or an addition to his salmon oil. Also, its the type of year here in Florida when allergens are wrecking havoc on everyone. Is there a stronger alternative to Benadryl that is over the counter? His vet is away for a week, but from what I read Apoquel is really good for environmental allergies, is there something similar to it OTC? Sorry for all the questions, Thanks for your time.
First off, thank you Currently 3 times a week with his Antiseptic & Antifungal Shampoo. I'm not sure if that's too often, but usually after 2-3 days his small pimple style rash (Which I believe is Atopic dermatitis) pops back up.
If your vet recommended 3 times a week then that's fine. If it's hot could you fill a paddling pool with cold water, let him lay in it to cool him down and ease it for him? x
He's my therapy dog so he's mostly inside sitting next to me in the air conditioning. I would to fill up a little pool for him but he his not a fan of water. We've been working on it together and he's gradually getting better and less afraid.
As I live in the UK I don't have air conditioning, could this cause his itchy skin? It's difficult for you. Maybe someone else has some ideas. x
