Aspen had/has horribly scratchy paws! They could be weapons! He sometimes sleeps with us at night and will leave our skin irritated if he touches us with his paws. We switched him to Fromm Large Breed Adult food for a variety of reasons and within a week his paws seem to have gotten much, much softer. I have been considering paw balm. Aspen will probably try to lick off whatever we put on his paws. Does anyone butter their dog's paws? What do you use? And how do you keep them from licking it off?

I'm envisaging a dog lying on its back with its paws in a paraffin wrap - day spa dog :D

On a serious note, aren't the paw pads meant to be rough? Wouldn't "softening" them up make them easier to injure?

If they're too rough, they can split. I like to use Musher's Secret once a week on my dogs' paws. It keeps them nice and supple and protects them from salt on the roads. It absorbs in really quickly so, whilst they may still lick a bit, it still does its job. It also makes my hands feel nice :)

I ditto Mushers Paw Wax. We use it on Harley every couple of weeks. A small pot has lasted me ages and her paws are lovely and soft. Her paws crack if they get too dry.

It does last forever though! I got my pot three years ago and I'm about halfway through :)

I'll have to wait until OH has gone to Saudi tomorrow - then I can pretend we've had it ages (and it only cost a couple of quid) :D.
