One of the first things I did with my first Lab was signed up with the local Gun Dog Club and went for a puppy session with them, 1 on 1. The first thing they told me when I got out the car in the field was to take off the collar and start to use a slip lead. I have done this ever since.

The reason was exactly this, they are so inquisitive in woods, most love to swim and they love to jump over things. There are lots of dangers when they have a collar on because they are so active, they can get snagged on all sorts. So we have never used collars, for this exact reason.

In the UK when in public your dog is legally obliged to wear identification on a tag attached to a collar or harness. The only exception is when your dog is actually working.

We don't ever recommend using slip leads on young puppies as they are not appropriate for dogs who haven't yet learned not to pull on lead, or who are likely to lunge towards distractions.
