Does anyone else's dog know the way to certain places? If I say we're going to see Nanna.. Stanley knows we're going to my mum and dads and he pretty much takes me there. He walks pretty nicely but as soon as we get close he tugs me all the way down the street to their house. My MIL was walking him once near their house and he dragged her to it and started no pulling her down the drive He knew Doggy day care as well, as soon as we got near he'd sit up in the car and start squeeling when he's normally dead quiet in the car. Does anyone else's dog know when they're going certain places? This is Stanley in my mum and dads street:
Stanley's a guide dog! My favorite example of Brogan was when we lived in Venice. We lived there four years in a row, but each year in a different apartment. Our evening walkies often lasted a good 2-3 hours and especially in the last few years and he was older, when he would get tired he'd either try to steer me towards the water buses so we wouldn't have to walk as far or simply try to head for the nearest apartment - even if it was one we'd lived in two years prior! I just couldn't convince him that I wasn't a Venetian property mogul with multiple homes. If we'd lived there once, it was 'home' and he was going there! What impressed me the most though is that the backways of Venice are really a maze and at night it's very dark - but if I'd let him lead me, he'd turn on a dime and go right back to the nearest our past apartments or our current one - whichever was closer. Smart boy!
When younger, we had a Collie X and we would drive to London from home, about 125 miles, at exactly 124 and a half miles from Mother in Laws house, she would wake up and start getting excited!
We used to drive to North Ayrshire three times a year with Callum (lab x) and Amber (collie x) and then also Wispa and eventually Tuppence. Callum and Amber would usually sleep for most of the journey (about 480 miles), occasionally going for a short walk at a service station, but sometimes not even bothering with that. However, as we turned off the coast road and up the hill to our destination they would both suddenly sit up and start getting excited. We had already changed from motorway driving to a slower, narrow, bendy road, so there was no obvious reason for their sudden reaction except, perhaps, the smell of the sheep and cattle on the farm!
Recently when Homer was in France with Hubby Homer too Hubby straight to the car park to find the car. He'd come out of the car to the appartment,my hen a week later was on a walk with Hubby and lead Hubby back to the car park entrance from a completely different direction. This happened again, Hubby had moved the car to a different car park, Homer again took Hubby back to the car. We've stayed in the same hotel in Folkstone on our way to France a year apart and Homer took us to the same room we had before.
Fable, my friend’s Guide Dog, has been staying with us this week. She can - Find the door Find the button (auto doors with a button) Find the chair (any empty one) Find the kerb Find the crossing When we came out of the garden centre my friend said ‘find the car’ and she found a brand new Range Rover. I said ‘thanks Fable, now find the keys!’ But she did find my car on second try Once she was in a strange shopping centre and my friend said ‘find costa coffee’ and she did! Fable and Keir - -
Now THAT'S a skill! Gave me a tickle, but impressive that she found a car that wasn't her own (yours) on the second try. I don't think I could do that! And that's great about finding the coffee shop. Did she learn that in Big School, or is that something your friend taught her?
They learn many ‘finds’ at Big School, but coffee shops are not one. Fable loves costa coffee so must have picked up the word herself The car park was full and we were at the back, so it was impressive. I had a really emotional time watching the ‘finished product’ at work, she’s just incredible. (At home and on free runs she’s loopier than Keir lol)
Two years after my Mum had moved from her house to a retirement home we took a drive past it and before we got there Oban was sitting up, whining, pacing and acting the same way he always had when we went to Grandma's house. @Boogie I LOVE that name, Fable.
