I wish everyone would add their location to their profile. Different parts of the world have different products, and different problems. Ex. N American homes often have big yards and fences. Most areas are not off leash, and most dogs are neutered. We have Coyotes almost everywhere, and a lot of other big wildlife, but foxes are not common enough to be a nuisance.

We live in Vlaardingen, a town in the neighborhood of Rotterdam and 15 km from Hoek van Holland. We also have a small cottage in the woods, suburbs of Putten, Gelderland
How lovely, my family are from Nijmegen and when I travelled there a lot I often got the train through Vlaardingen (oost en west) from the Hoek via Rotterdam. Now I have Maisy and I haven't been since but you can put your dog overnight in a kennel on the boat, don't know if I fancy that but I suppose I will one day.
Can you not take the dog with you around the ship and into your cabin now? I lived in Germany and came back in 2009 with the ferry, and we were able to take the dog wherever we wanted to on the boat, except the restaurant - we did put him in the kennel for an hour when we had our tea and then breakfast. It was the Amsterdam - Rosyth ferry I used that time, but also seen dogs on the Newcastle - Amsterdam ferry I used a couple of years ago.
As far as I know, and this is about 2 years ago on the Stena Harwich/Hoek route, you can either leave your dog in your car or use one of the kennels. You can see the kennel on a channel on the tv in the cabin. I have seen people walking around with dogs when about to disembark (no pun intended!) but I assume they have just collected their pooch from the kennel. It would be great to take her with me in the cabin, she could easily last the 8hours without needing toilet but I don't think they allow it yet. Just found this quote on their website, it sort of contradicts itself, firstly it is saying they must use the kennel and then they recommend it, unless they mean that the dog may destroy the car if not in the kennel? All pets must travel inside a vehicle or in the onboard kennel and remain there throughout the crossing. We recommend that dogs should travel in the provided onboard kennel and Stena Line cannot be held responsible for any material or immaterial damage that may arise from not using our kennel facilities
That sounds like they recommend not using the car. I haven't done the shorter crossings to be fair, just the overnight ones.
