Hi all! Ema is now 8 months and I was wondering if I could walk her around 6 am (as we do now) and then at 2 pm (an 8-hour interval). Last walk is always around 7.30 pm. The length of the walks/play/free running /training is usually 1 hour. I love going out with her but am trying to get a better balance between that and my work /family routines. What do you think?
If each walk is around an hour, I think that is far too much (3 hours per day) especially for an 8 month old. Harley (aged 4.5 years) gets walked In the morning for approximately 1 hour, then again later in the day for approximately 30 mins. I do lots of training and mental games at home to use her brain and tire her out more.
Hi, Naya! Thank you for your thoughts! Yes, I agree, 3 hours would be too much. The last walk is just toilet, really. So, 2 hours, top. And brain games and tug too is excellent throughout the day. Have a lovely day!
On leash walks? Or off? Off is far less stressful on joints, especially if you have a forested area with winding trails like I do. Still, I kept to the 5 minute rule, more or less.
Keir is a nine month old Guide Dog puppy. He is allowed 45 minutes, twice a day. This is the absolute maximum and the rule is there for their developing joints. In between he gets lots of training, which is just as tiring for them was walking.
Great! I'll stick with that advice. And what about the time between walks? Is 8 hours too much for her to hold it? What's your opinion?
