The Pig has always been a bit of an itchy creature, and I think she has some seasonal allergies as has runny eyes quite often. But she has been increasingly itchy round her armpits and chest and is getting quite bald there too. I have changed her food a lot so don’t think it is dietary, and I have noticed a slightly gingery tinge to her fur where she is itchy which I recently read might be associated with a fungal infection? Whatever it is it is quite minor but long-standing, and I don’t really want to take her to the vet and get various strong prescriptions or expensive allergy tests etc yet. I just thought I might try an anti-fungal anti-bacterial cream that you can buy off the internet first just to see if it helps? Does anyone have any recommendations? I have seen various adverts for something called ‘stinky stuff’, but I am sure there are others?
Can’t help with this one but hope you manage to get to the bottom of it. I have excezma which can be terribly itchy so kind of know how horrible it is.
Weak povidone iodine solution is a good antifungal. Dilute it with water till it resembles weak black tea. I soak cotton wool and then wipe over the fur and try to get it onto the skin. I was surprised it didn’t stain white fur! Leaves a pleasant smell and removes that wet dog smell or sour smell of a fungal infection. Just be careful about using it frequently on broken skin - especially for dogs with thyroid problems.
Thanks @MF! Do you just get normal Providone Iodine that is used on humans too? Or does it have to specify for dogs?
I bought the one for human use. I don’t know if there’s one specifically for dogs - I’m sure it’s all the same chemical. I asked the pharmacist at the pharmacy for a bottle. He also recommended chlorohexidine, said it does the same job. But I do like the scent of the povidone iodine. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Povidone-iodine
