It is - you get Toxocara canis in dogs and catis (i think) in cats. Both equally nasty to a developing foetus but most dog and cat owners are already immune - its the non cat owners that need to be more wary.
That's interesting, I wonder if cats get the blame because they often poo in gardens and sand pits, and dog poo gets cleared up. But still a bit bleurgh if we've got immunity from our dogs' poo somehow. Though honestly not surprising with all that licking they do.
I should qualify that by saying mostly immune. Growing up with a cat or dog most young adults are. Not sure whether first exposure as an adult would be the same as supposedly our hygiene practices are better than kids @leejane
Yes, @leejane and @edzbird , Pongo and I have pooled our pocket money and put a £3 each way bet on Total Recall at 12:1. So if it wins we win £43 and if it finishes in the first 6 we win £7. My record in the Grand National is not impressive, but perhaps with Pongo sharing my bet this year it will be different....
Have asked one of my boys to put a little something on him too. I have no knowledge of the inside of a betting shop apart from what I learned on Coronation Street Hope Pippa @editor has had a little flutter too.
I so upset about Rory hurting his tail that I can't sleep and feel like crying. My triggers are stacking. very very upset. I feel like crying I never cry even when the sky is falling in.
What happened to Rory's tail @SwampDonkey? I must have missed a post. I'm so sorry to hear it We woke in the middle of the night to a house full of smoke and of course our first thoughts were 'Dear God - the Dog!' but within minutes we realised the house wasn't on fire, the whole suburb was chock-a-block covered in smoke and ash. We checked the news and there are big bush fires a couple of suburbs away. No homes lost, but good friends of ours spent the night watching the fire get closer then get pushed back thankfully by a wind change. Is there nothing else Mother Nature can throw at us this crazy Autumn? Yesterday was 35 degrees but today cooler at only 25 and it looks like it will start staying in the mid to low 20's in the next week or so. Bush fires are not unusual here - but NOT 6 WEEKS OUT FROM WINTER!! Now we, Maxx and everything in the house smells like a tribe of chain-smokers live here
@SwampDonkey what happened to Rory's tail? You've got so much on your plate with your own health and Moo's, it's understandable that a small thing could end up being too much to cope with. If you need to cry then let yourself, you don't have to be Wonder Woman all the time
Goodness Robyn, stay safe! Our weather (Melbourne) changed yesterday but we ended up with cold, wet and gale force winds! We even had the heating on! I had to use the aircon on Friday! Ella's energy and enthusiasm has come back with a vengeance since the drop in temperature
Thanks Em, the wind is blowing so the smoke is slowly drifting away. Our friends are still on high alert which is a worry. Maxx is noticeably chirpier today being cooler and it's so good to see. Sorry to hear winter has hit suddenly, I expect the same will happen here soon. It's so much easier to slowly acclimatise rather than summer one day and winter the next.
We had an ice storm yesterday and Quinn was so stressed! Ice pellets were hitting the windows and the wind was very loud and every noise she would lift her head, and eventually she sat up and panted for quite some time before she would settle. She wanted to be right next to us, which is unusual. She was weary of outside this morning (our gutters fell down with the weight of the ice and a branch fell on my car - both very loud). She didn't want to leave the doorway, then bolted to get into the car. I hope this wears off...
Poor Quinn, that sounds very scary. I hate the dreaded pant, makes me so anxious when it happens. I hope that spring is somewhere around the corner.
Wow, that sounds awful! I hope the damage is easily repaired. We had a hail storm earlier this year that left significant hail damage on both cars. Two insurance claims later and they are both repaired What is the difference between and ice storm and a hail storm? I hope poor Quinn is ok. Is she too scared to take treats? Maybe she could find a lovely trail of treats leading from the front door?
Poor Quinn and poor you! I can't imagine how scary that storm must have been. Maxx was scared of storms when he first came home but he seems to be fine now. Not that our storms involve snow of course...I've only seen snow a couple of times in my whole life - when I lived in New Zealand and tried skiing (very unsuccessfully) and once when I went to Europe for a holiday and we went to the Swiss Alps. I hope Quinn settles and your car and gutters can be fixed quickly
No damage to the car that I can see...yet Good question...I’m not entirely sure. I think hail happens in warmer conditions maybe. It was pooring rain but since it was below freezing it froze on impact/in the air and everything was covered in ice and it was a wet, slushy mess (and still is). It was very slippery and Lots of power outages, car accidents etc. She seems ok now...it’s all melting and wind has died down! We’ll see how she does going into the back yard this evening!
Ah OK, so it's rain that freezes on the way down because the air is so cold. I think hail forms in the cloud and actually falls as hail. We've definitely had hail on a warm day, usually it comes with a storm that's broken the warm weather.
At dog training, I have noticed Coco is the ONLY dog who wags his tail like mad while he's in a sit or a down, focusing on OH. Until yesterday. I think the new tail wagger is also a German shepherd/Labrador cross - I didn't get a chance to speak to the lady.
