Stella was digging in the litter box yesterday and made herself sick with the squirts. How can I stop her from eating cat poopie? I don't want to keep picking up diarrhea
I would block access to it by putting it behind a baby gate, or using one that has a lid so only the cat(s) will fit.
With my pup I movec the cat litter tray, which was hooded, to the bathroom where pup couldn't go because if the stairgate. Also moved the cat food to the upstairs landing so they could eat in peace and again pup couldn't reach it.
Hooded litter boxes with cat flaps are a thing, and my cats used to have one (and used it easily) but they would constantly poo on the sides, it drove me mad. Now their litter box is a gigantic plastic storage container, like the kind you fit under beds It's behind baby gates, but you'd better believe that Xena still helps herself to a snack if I leave the gate open
For my daughters cat we customized a 4 drawer dresser by knocking out the bottom 2 drawers and made swinging doors. We cut a hole in the side for the cat to get in. Also seen a bench customized. My mom's cat and my brother's cats use a litter box with a top hole. Some kind of large bin that they cut a hole into the lid. Though their dogs are smaller than my labs. I wonder how tall it would have to be? I put a door chain on my laundry room door so only the cats fit thru. My neighbors have outside cats and a swing set with pea gravel. Upside I guess is my dogs clean up the cat poo in the pea gravel so their toddlers don't play in it.
My kitty's litter box is in the basement, and so far Moose has never been downstairs. If he starts heading down (eventually, I'm sure curiosity will get to him) I'll have to go back to using the covered box.
I don't think there is a good way of preventing dogs eating cat poo from a litter tray if they are so inclined, especially if they have gotten into a habit. Cats like space and privacy to do their business, so having a quiet, private area, protected from dogs via a barrier is the best way to go.
We have a latch on the door to the litter box, so the cats can fit through the door and the dog cannot.
Our downstairs one is hooded and under a unit behind a bit of cardboard that used to be tall enough to keep out nosey puppies but the cats could jump over. Now he can easily stick his head over but apart from the occasional peek has never gone in. The upstairs one is in the bathtub which we never use we don’t smell, we have a separate shower haha
