My lab puppy is now 11 months!! When do you recommend switching to adult food? I know he will still be growing/filling out for a good few months but he has been a pretty static weight for the past 2 month's or so. His stools also seen to have been softer lately but nothing has changed so I wondered if he is getting too much protein now? We feed acana large breed puppy and would be switching to the adult version. I really appreciate all your brilliant advice. Thank you.
Hello to you and Coa, sorry I don’t have the answer, but it’s a great question though as Mason is 9 months and I did ask the pet shop assistant and we are on K9 Optimum puppy food and I was advised to stay on this till he was either 1-1/2years. Best to check with either with packing or the vet to be on safe side
It depends on the food, but most large breed puppy foods recommend feeding until 12-18months. There are a few who feed Acana on here who can probably give you more info about that specific food, but we made the switch over a few weeks at 13-14 months. Our food recommended feeding puppy food until 13-17 months.
Hi, my vet recommended to stay on puppy food , though it was a 'junior' version, until at least 14 months, up to 18 months. This was on royal canin.
We fed Acana large puppy food 3.5 cups a day in till our 36kg puppy was 18 months then switched large breed adult and fed 3 cups a day until a few weeks ago. He’s 2 years in a few weeks and we dropped the ration a 1/4 cup because he’s gaining to much weight. Don’t be in a hurry to change to an adult food, the puppy foods are designed to grow your pup slowly to give them enough time to adjust and mature the joints and bone growth appropriately. Switching to soon could possibly promote rapid growth and cause issues. On another note.... there is a class action law suit against the manufacturers of Acana and Origen (same company) because of aligations about the ingredients. The mother company has recently switched its manufacturing plant from Canada to the USA and quality control has allegedly declined. The word on the street is that both foods were tops while being made in Canada and might not be anymore. I’m not a scientist so i can’t say but internet still rates them 5 stars from before the law suit launched. FYI.
We are also on Acana Large Breed.... will look into that as well. Re the OP: our breeder told us to transition via Acana Puppy&Junior. An "inbetweeney" from the puppy food an adult food. We are a long way away from that so I haven't looked into it yet but maybe that is an option for you as well?
I just want to be clear... I’m not slamming Champion Dog Foods Company, and I have no idea if the claims are valid, I just want people to be aware that there is class action law suit. Whether or not they are negligent is up to the courts. We switched because the vet said Duggan had allergies not because of the Law Suit.
@Coa I've not long posted this info on the class action lawsuit which may be helpful in decision making https://www.petful.com/food/orijen-lawsuit-2018/ I always advise changeover from puppy/junior food to adult should be in line with the specific manufacturer recommendations. This varies between the brands. A quick look at Acana says 18months but I only had a quick look at one variety, not across the range.
As per recommendation from our vet, we switched to half puppy food half adult food at 6 months old. He’s now almost 8 months and is only eating adult food. However, our breeder recommended we feed him puppy food for 2 years.
