Getting really worried about my girl's right eye. This appeared suddenly on Sunday. We took her to the vet Monday morning. They flushed her eye and did a fluorescein eye stain exam to look for injuries or foreign objects. They didn't find anything wrong with the eye itself, thankfully. Vet said it just looked like some inflammation of the inner eyelid due to an allergen or chemical irritant. They sent us home with eye drops containing antibiotics and a steroid to reduce inflammation. But we're on Day 3 (of a 7 day course) of drops and it's not looking ANY better! I called the vet today and they said the drops can take some time to work, but shouldn't I be seeing at least a tiny improvement by now? I'm wondering if I should take her back to the vet tomorrow. Anyone had anything like this? Any idea what it could have been? She'd been playing in the yard that day with her sister, and we went on a walk later that day. Maybe some kind of plant toxin got in her eye from running through the bushes playing? Or weed killer, fertilizer, etc, from sniffing bushes on the walk? I wouldn't worry so much if it were showing some signs of improvement. Does it really take this long for drops to start working?
I can't see your photo, I'm afraid. But yes, I would definitely take her back to the vet if you are worried. Eyes are very delicate things...
Do you also wash her eye twice a day with some cold boiled water? Most of the time doctors including vets forget to tell this.
No. They flushed it out at the vet but didn't tell us to do so ourselves. I think we're going to head back to the vet this afternoon.
How was the visit? That does look very inflamed. Rinsing the eye with sterile saline is always good to keep it clean and free of debris.
Oh that looks uncomfortable. I hope the vet could give you some more information on what it is, and hopefully it will be better soon.
Well, the eye was not getting better after a few days so we went back to the vet on Thursday. This time they sedated her so they could do a deeper eye flush and fluorescein dye exam under the inner eyelid and all around the eye socket. They still could find no sign of injury, foreign objects, growths, or infection. Our vet was baffled so she consulted a pet ophthalmologist and even they could not explain it. Best guess is she got some sort of plant, bug, or chemical toxin in it that just got it super irritated. We were sent home with an antibiotic/steroid eye ointment that stays in the eyes longer than the drops, and we are putting it in 4x/day instead of the twice daily we were doing with the drops. She is looking a little better today, so I'm feeling hopeful, but improvement has just been so slow! Sure wish I knew what happened so we could avoid this in the future.
My lab is having the same problem right now except he started with an injury to his eye. It definitely cleared up and the injury had resolved but a couple weeks later it started to get red and look the same way. What was the name of that medication or what it could be after an injury.
Hi pleased your pup is much better. My husband said try search Google for "cherry eye". He remembered he had seen this in a friend pup before and we just googled it and it does look similar to your pups.I Just a suggestion,might help.
