Off for a week soon to stay near Helmsley in a dog-friendly cottage. I see a previous post from Bruer (Elizabeth and Baxter) mentioning Whitby beach and Dalby Forest. Does anyone have any dog-friendly suggestions for us? Any suggestions welcome, though no doubt they will be less active than in our imaginations thanks to OH
Whitby is lovely. Roseberry Topping is also really nice. Richmond and Reeth are also really nice depending on how far you want to travel. Welcome to my neck of the woods
Long time since I visited but remember lovely waljs in Dakby forest with my Italian Spinone. Whitby is lovely as well. A friend of ours visits regularly and highly recommends Whitby. Enjoy!!
It may be a bit far (45 minutes from Helmsley) but Fountains Abbey is one of my favorite places to visit in the UK - plus very dog-friendly. Saltburn by the Sea has a lovely beach with loads of doggies and a couple good chip shops right on the seaside. Whitby is a lot more interesting, but Saltburn is worth a little stopover for dog walkies along the beach.
Robin Hood's Bay, not far from Whitby and a lovely walk from there along the coastal path, is really pretty and last time we were there (2016) every pub was really dog friendly, even with a wet, muddy, sandy Labrador.
Had a great week. Helmsley is a lovely village and very welcoming to dogs, with a great array of bakers and butchers. We went to Scarborough North beach where there is a dog friendly part at the end, and enjoyed a walk too around Peasholm Park. York was a great day out, really dog friendly shops, and ate outside at the Little Shambles street food area as it was a nice day. Dogs weren't allowed on the walls unfortunately but that was OK as we had done that before. We took Lilly too to Ampleforth Abbey, and although she needed to be on a short lead and not actually allowed on the abbey tour, we were made very welcome and had fabulous applecake and cream tea in their dog-friendly courtyard. She was brilliant at Eden Camp, welcome in all areas, we love this place - first time we have been with a dog though. And we spend several hours walking in Dalby Forest - although at £9 we thought it quite expensive to get in and park, they had well marked walking routes, as well as separate family cycling, mountain biking, and running routes, with good facilities and plenty of picnic areas. We had a lovely week away. We stayed on a working farm, which was peaceful most of the time, and once Lilly got used to the different noises - including early cow feeding time at 6.30am, all was good. It didn't have a secure garden, but was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. They had a GSD and a 6 month old terrier that Lilly got on really well with. Cows, sheep, chickens and horses all on site. Loads of lovely places to walk. Have to start planning the next holiday now.......
Great place - we spent a week there with Sky few years back. The Cinder Track (old railway line) is a fabulous walk. We loved it.
I've done the Cinder Track twice with Solstice, previous black Lab and am looking forward to doing it with little Joy. A pretty, relaxing, easy walk, without the steep hills so often associated with Yorkshire (although I do really love the hills and being up high with my dog.) Would definitely recommend the Cinder Track. Very dog friendly cafe as well.
