    Hello all,

I was wondering are bully sticks safe for puppies? I was trying to give Austin something to chew on other than his Kong’s and Nylabones. I heard bully sticks are suppose to be safe. Let me know what you all think. Thanks!

    Probably safer than nylabones.
I would supervise any chewing though, just in case a larger bit comes off and could pose a choking risk - goes for anything really!
Lilly liked bully sticks but they stank the house out, I was less of a fan. Apparently most makes don't, and I had bad luck.

Snowie adored bully sticks (you do know they’re penises?). I remember one time I was on a work call and gave him one to keep him busy. He ate the whole thing up and then vomited it out in the floor. I could do nothing being on the call and he promptly ate up the whole sticky mess. Nothing untoward happened.

I don’t give them anymore - they’re expensive and as adult he gobbles them up in a second.

We've never had a stink-free bully!!! They are vile! Outside only in our house! There are usually 3 or 4 knocking about in the yard. Really the only thing we let our pup chew on. He likes to bring them over and sit on our feet and chew them as a way of spending time with us and they make me gag! But he does love them.

The first week we had to return to work when he was 11 weeks old, my husband decided to leave him with his bully in the house. I came home with my son and his friends after school and when we opened the door all of the kids were gagging and screaming, they ran out the back door making atomic alarm siren noises (as 10yo boys do!) It took me three days to get the stench out!!!

But as outside chews they are great! We buy them as 80cm long pieces and I use a saw to cut it in half to give it to him. They dont stink until they've been chewed (a tiny bit but only if you actually put your nose to it) so I put the other half in the basement until he needs a new one.

Hysterical. And that's enough to put me off EVER trying one with Coco. He can stick to chicken drumsticks - inoffensive.

Funny I’ve heard other people say they smell but I’ve never experienced that. Ashima loves them - I get the braided as they are big and they last a long time.

I don’t allow anything in the kennel other than actual femur bones that are large in size.

I've never had a smelly one. I don't use them a lot as I think they're pretty high calorie, but the dogs do love them. As a puppy, Squidge once swallowed one whole - it was about 20cm long both going in and coming out

High calories yes, but the miniscule anou3bts that are actually consumed are probably burned off in the effort to get those pieces off! It takes him about a week of gnawing at it for hours a day to even notice any difference in size.

Swallowed a whole one? Hmmm... I have a feeling maybe what I know as a bully stick is not the same thing!

Never experienced the smell, but Vanilla only gets them now and again.

If you do however want a good smell, 'shark cartilage'. But we only get the local ones. Easy to break in 2 and are about 20cm longs. Now they stink when chewed...

I gave Xena pizzle sticks when she was a pup and they didn't smell. They kept her occupied for at least 20 minutes.

Pizzles are just the smaller ones, aren't they? I definitely had the choice between pizzles and bullies, and went for pizzles because they were smaller.

Bully sticks (dehydrated bull penis:( http://m.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_treats_chews/beef/pizzle/229788

The ones we have are between half a centimetre to a centimetre diameter and about 20cm long. Take an adult Lab less than a minute to eat, but might occupy a puppy for half an hour if you’re lucky :)

Yes the same thing then. The ones I buy are a bit bigger in diameter and 60cm long. I saw them in half (needs a proper saw and takes a good bit of time to cut through it). They are very hard, like a stick, but you can't bend it and snap it. My puppy chews on them for hours - this morning sat at my feet for 45 minutes while I had my coffee and he just gets the ends soggy and gets some small bits off. After a couple of weeks you can notice it looks a bit shorter but not much - a cm or two. And that's with free range chewing for a few hours each day. No way an adult dog could eat it in 30 minutes, it takes that long to saw through it!

You wait ‘till those big back teeth come in. Tatze dispatches them in less than a minute! Keir is twelve months old and takes a little longer - maybe two minutes :)

A 60cm bull penis....is that real? I may live near a farm but not been that close to a bull at the requisite time
