Hi I'm new to this site and i know this question has probably been asked a lot but I'm having my new lab puppy end of the month and I'm looking at the best puppy food for him. I've read some good things about skinners puppy food but there's a few different varieties of skinners puppy which is best or what other brands all information will be greatly appreciated thanks.
For us, Skinners is great (we're not on the Puppy one though - Field & Trial adult - duck & rice - I simply picked this flavour out of the air and it as perfect for him) - Coco loves it (the most important factor in food buying), it agrees with his tummy (perhaps the joint most important factor then). He's in lovely condition, and its affordable & readily available. On top of this I think it is a relatively "good" food.
Hi, I had Cassie who is now 2 on skinners field and trial puppy and then junior. About a year ago I looked into changing her food for various reasons and tried Burns Original and i'm very pleased with it, it suits her very well. She only farts or has smelly breathe now if she's been eaten something she shouldn't on a walk, and has had no issues with her anal glands since the swap. At the time, she weighed 32kg , she now weighs 25.5kg. She was spayed 3 months ago, and I thought i'd have to limit her food straightaway to avoid weight gain, but in fact she eats the same quantity and weighs the same as on her op day! The vets are very pleased, in fact have said they wouldn't want to see her skinnier. It is quite pricey but works out at less than a £ a day, and she looks so good on it i'm very happy .
Tatze has been on Skinners for five years, salmon and rice - she’s slim, happy and healthy with a shiny coat. He poos are always firm. It has better ingredients than some foods which are twice the price.
Thank you all for your reply it really does sound like a really good choice. I've contacted skinners and they're going to send me a few samples so I can taste test him with. Thanks once again
Sorry to be negative, but had Jax on Royal Canin (via Amazon for acceptable price) and recently changed to Skinners after reading good reviews on here. However, it doesn't agree with him. Been nearly two weeks now and still a flatulence issue and loose stool. So just ordered new bag of Royal Canin today. I did notice on the comments for Skinners that it doesn't agree with a few dogs. Good luck with it though, its a great price. (it also means I have about 10kg still in the house if anyone local wants it - Fife).
Hattie & Charlie are on Skinners Salmon & Rice, love it! I get it on repeat monthly order from Amazon, free P&P it appears on my doorstep so I don't have to think, always good for me! xx
I have gone back to Royal Canin now, but wonder if I just picked the wrong Skinners. Went for the Junior Working Dog version, maybe should have went for the Salmon or the Duck. Might try again in future.
My late boy Sam had a delicate constitution but he was on Skinners duck and rice for most of his six years , suited him down to the ground . If I ever took on another Labrador , I wouldn't hesitate to feed Skinners duck and rice or salmon and rice .
I think the same thing! Cassie was on Junior too. I am tempted to try the Duck and Rice for her. Would certainly be easier on the pocket ! But Burns suits her so well I'm hesitant to change, especially as so far she's kept the weight off post spay without restricting the quantity.
I think I'd be inclined to stick with the Burns for Cassie since she's doing so well on it. No point courting an upset if there's no reason to.
That's what I think really, it would only be cost to be honest, but even so the Original Burns works out at less than a pound a day.
Think I will stick to RC too - don't think I can go through a week of wind again lol. Especially as I take him into work with me.
Coco really only gets the occasional wind on Skinners, but it very rarely smells. It's usually just a big, comedic trumping sound. Especially if he's sitting on the tiles in the kitchen
Thanks for your replys my breeder has been feeding him on skinners puppy yellow bag and he seems to be doing great on it so I think I'll keep him on it for a while and go from there thanks for the comments you've all been a great help. Bouncer says thanks too
