Last night I was 'working' in the dining room (secretly trawling the Labrador Forum) when OH yells out 'Rob can you get in here NOW please'. I rushed to the kitchen fearing a life-threatening incident but no, it was just that Maxx had OH pinned up against the kitchen cabinets lovingly leaning against his legs and every time OH tried to move Maxx moved too so he couldn't get back to the stove to get dinner finished! We both laughed and Maxx looked at us from the middle of the kitchen floor as though to say 'what?' He (OH not Maxx) was cooking steak and chips so it was that frantic time when the steaks are ready, the chips need to come out asap before everything ends up overcooked. It was delicious (he is an excellent cook - ask my waistline) and yes, of course, Maxx got some steak so everyone was happy
That sounds just amazing @leejane, I am totally envious! I did have to google 'squiffy' - that's a new one for me. I like it!
I had a slightly exciting morning today. I got to stand next to a police officer and watch while a police dog tracked 4 car-stealing kids across the park. Xena jumped on the officer. He gave her a big cuddle and told me that she reminded him of his dog. Once the police dog had made it clear that the kids had run off in the opposite direction, I was free to go (they didn't want me to potentially contaminate the scent). Very cool to see a police dog in action!
Squiffy in NZ means nauseous, but from context I figured it meant tiddly. Same in Aus, Robyn? Our ESOL speakers must really struggle on here sometimes!
No, actually, I'd never heard of it at all. I used to get ribbed something terrible when I lived in NZ due to all of the words we either abbreviate or just use slang for that end in an I or y with the upward Aussie inflection E.g. bindi (thorn/prickle) Cocky (cockatoo) Eskie (chiller - or as you fondly call it in NZ 'Chilli bin') sunnies (sunglasses) cozzie (bathers, swimmers) Barbie (bbq) greenie (environmentalist) Bikkie (biscuit) Kindy (Kindergarten) chewie (chewing gum) There's a million more but you get the picture. But now Squiffy is in my vocab for when I have a few drinkies
Yep, I'm liking the sound of squiffy so adding it to my vocab too! My pommie family always laugh at our ability to shorten everything. For example, the sporting ground called the "Melbourne Cricket Ground". Nope, that's too long, let's call it the "MCG" for short. But when that feels too long, let's just call it the "G"
Maybe soon it'll just disappear altogether? Probably for the base, cricket is dullll!!! *waits for the mudslinging to start from near and far*
Hahaha! I enjoy watching cricket but can understand that others find it boring. Speaking of boring sports you can't beat soccer. Kick...kick....yawn....kick..fall to ground and carry-on like a demented pork chop
Football irritates me on so many levels. I not even going to start about it. From Sunday league to international football it's all
Quinn's diet has resulted in a 5lb weight loss since end of March...she's got her summer bod back, but the questions about her breed have started again. Yesterday OH said "she's lab, but not fat" to someone
As I am away had to get a doggy fix. My uncles dog I remember him when he was a pup of only 5months old. Now he is 14 years, but still has a cheekyness in him. Name 'Kaos'
I belong to a local dog page. In the past week there have been 3 separate posts by people looking for a new home for their dog, twice because they were "moving overseas and couldn't take them" and once because of a new baby. By the third post I was furious. I shared an anecdote about my friend who had to choose between bringing her furniture back to NZ, or bringing her dog - she chose the dog (I may have been furious but that was all I shared, no OMG HOW COULD YOU DO THAT). A couple of people, including the admin who I know irl, lost their minds - I'm so judgmental, I should know better than to say something unsupportive etc. I shouldn't have said anything because honestly, what was the point, but you wouldn't leave your kids behind, so why would you leave your dog? I live in this little bubble where people's dogs are as important to them as their human family, and apparently a lot of people do not feel the same way. A lot of people liked my post (before it was removed of course) so I know that I'm not alone, but honestly, dogs aren't something to be discarded because you move overseas, and we shouldn't be behaving like that's normal.
I feel so frustrated for you. I have also noticed that so few people consider their dogs to be family members in the way that we do. When I hear "it's just a dog" my blood begins to boil but I simply respond "actually, she's my first born".
