Hello I'm hoping for helpful tips with my 15week old choc lab. She's currently crate trained for night sleeping and for when I have to leave her during the day.. I know she is still a puppy and her waking in the night is important. The thing is she's falling into deep sleep most nights at 8pm so is waking very early 5am .. tried setting alarm for 12ish or later but that seems to wake her up even earlier. What's making it worse is that she used to go to back into her crate in the middle of the night with no problems but now insists on having a cuddle in the lounge. I cuddle her and when she's settled take her back to the crate, she then goes back to sleep. I know this is probably the wrong thing to do but I'm so tired, but at least I can have naps during the day everyone else has to go to school or work... I'm supposed to work at home running my own business but I'm so tired! Please help....!
How many times is she waking in the night? You have my sympathies... Maslow is up with the birds.. I miss sleep!
Usually just the once between 1am and 2am. She did get up at 4am the other day but came back to bed with me
So I think I did a bad thing last night... I put her bed in our room, she still woke for her nighttime toilet but slept in until 6am which is great and went straight to sleep on her bed. The thing is this can't be good can it? Tonight I'm going to try putting her in her crate at bed time then when she wakes I can take her into our room to her bed.. I don't want her sleeping in our room as a long term solution !
Having got up this morning at 5:15 with the puppy who I swear is broken (no living creature should be this happy at 5 in the morning) I can honestly say I would have brought him into our bed if it meant more sleep. But honestly - yeah I think it’s going to end up just another habit you have to break if you don’t want it to be a long term thing.
Understand where you're at lol how can they be so annoying and so cute at the same time! Will see how we go tonight! Everyone says they sleep eventually... one day...
Hi Caydey's mum, I have a 16 week choc lab, she sleeps in her crate in our bedroom and eventually will sleep in her own bed in our room, just like our last lab. She sleeps from 11 -7.30 most nights. I wondered why you don't want her in your room long term as we found this really helped our girls settle especially as they are pack animals and like to be with you. Hope this helps
I think it was sensible to take her to your room - it gave her enough reassurance / security to sleep longer and it gave you a better night. You will be able to move her out of your room later - I’ve started each of my 3 pups in my room and later they each slept downstairs. But I would start the night with her in your room and she may not even wake to go out in the night.
Balders crate has been in my room sense day one, don't mind I am on day 4. I have PTSD and want him to be use to sleeping in my room, I don't care if he is on my bed as it is just me, as it really helps me just hearing the breathing from his crate. I also agree about no living thing should be happy at 5 am, I remember how cranky I was in the military doing it. I lucked out at he got up at 5:40.
We have this with the bengals in summer. They chirp and chatter at the birds first thing in the morning. Cute has never got old so fast.
That’s it! The first few times I was like awwww look the birdies woke him up (we have a thrush nest that is LOUD)... by today I stomped down the stairs swearing I was going to get a car to eat the birds
When I had my first GSP I heard that the owners who had her brother, were so exhausted from him yelling all night that they gave him red wine!!!
Thank you everyone the reason I don't want her in there long term is for our martial relations lol Will continue as we are right now in crate until her night time toilet and then in her bed in our room. This morning she woke briefly at 5am climbed on our bed and went back to sleep. Not ideal but I'm happy and so is she so that's all that matters isn't it
Her crate is big so stays down stairs in the kitchen. Eventually allow her to sleep where she wants. Our sleep is very important to us, we've had to shut our three cats into the utility room as they constantly wake at 3am too - they are not allowed outside.
For me, this part explains a major part of your problem. As soon as you respond to a dog "insisting", she becomes the boss and you become her "pet human". That situation can last the next 12 years or so
Haha yes I know... but what about sleep for everyone else... Maybe at the weekend we force it back... I don't know she's happy and she'll sleep eventually all night
My 19 month old just started sleeping through the night this week. She now sleeps from 10pm till 6am.
