my 12 week old puppy has bad smelling wind he is on 300g a day of kimble any advice please hes also waking at 2am and going a pooh what time should he have his last food at night I have been giving it at 6pm thankyou any advice very helpful.
What kind/brand of kibble do you give him? When my puppy was with breeder, he was on Farmina puppy medium, which I changed to puppy maxi since day 1. After a few days he had gas. It smelled very bad. But it was just once or twice a day, so I didn'tmind, it happens. Than I switched to Bosch maxi puppy and it stopped once it was 80% Bosch 20 Farmina. But he started schraching his face and licking his paws, so I decided to go to Taste of the wild pacific stream puppy (I was going to change it at 18 months, when he'llgo to adult). I have been mixing it for 2 days now (80% old 20% new) and it started again (but just half an hour or 15 minutes before ge goes poo). I guess with my puppy it happens with high proteine food. As for 2am waking up, it is normal. I fed mine at 6pm, left him with a frozen Kong, and he would wake me up at 1 or 2 am to go potty. I moved the time back gradually, to 1am, midnight, 11 pm. Try waking him up sooner. I had to wake up mine at 11pm, we went out, came back and he would sleep until 6am. When he was 14 weeks I just didn't wake him. I tried one night putting him in his crate at 7pm, and he slept until 6am like a baby(but he was clean for 2 weeks before I tried this). He only woke up the second day to go out at 11pm, and never again. You just have to try. It will not come on its own. Before this puppy I had a very stubborn Vizsla, who wasn't potty trained until he was 4 months. He would wake me up twice a night and then pee wright infront of me getting dressed. Every puppy is diffrent, some get there sooner, but it will get better.
As @Mango asked, what brand is he on? How much does he weigh? 300g sounds quite a lot but it'll depend on his size/food quality. Does his poop start ok but finish soft? My lad is 17 weeks and on less than 300g/day of Orijen Large Breed Puppy still.
Hi @terry24, looking at the Purina website (https://www.purina.co.uk/dog/beta/dog-food/puppy/puppy-chicken) it's a bit confusing but it seems to suggest that a 3 month old 10kg pup should be on 120g/day. Now that seems very low so I would call your vet and/or your Purina for advice. My question re soft poo can be an indicator of over feeding. If it starts off ok then gets soft towards the end that can be a sign of overfeeding and could explain the stinky bum. Long story short, I'd give your vet a call to be sure.
The food you are using is high on proteine(28%) which could be the cause of gas in your puppy. The amount of food per day depends on the brand. You should have a guide on package. If it says 300g/day for a 3 months old, you should consider a) exageration of manufacturer b) the breed and size/weight of your dog/puppy. My pup is almost 17 weeks and he is on 340g. The guide on kibble bag says 400-450g. That is waaaay too much. How do you know how much is too much? Look closely at your puppy. The first indicator is his stool. If it starts hard/normal consistency in the morning and it's easy to pick up and then it goes more and more diarrhea like through the day, you are feeding him too much. Try giving him 10g less the next day.
Best source of food is www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk where you can research every food available in the UK. Recommendation can be good but what suits one pup might not suit another and then there is the price of a food, ease of availability etc. We all have different criteria.
Fibre and carbs are usually the gas culprits, caused by gut bacteria eating the fibre/carbs and producing gas. Dogs fed on raw meat and raw meaty bones generally produce smaller and harder poos and less gas than dogs that eat kibble, which is generally high in carbs like rice and corn. I’d recommend you look into raw feeding - I feed my dog that way and I believe it’s healthier than most kibble. I feed whole meat and bones; I don’t buy prepared meals because I like to know exactly what my dog is eating.
I did not say Purina is bad. You just need to find balance. If it doesnt improve, you should try something without grain. Like I said I use Taste of the wild, I have used it on all my dogs, no problem. If you are not on the budget and can afford best product, go with Orijen or Canagan (I would go with Canagan but where I come from it is more expensive than in UK). Also N&D is a good choice. Or Blue buffalo (they dont sell it here), Barking heads, Now...there are many choices, but not all dogs/puppies thrive on the same food.

My 8 month pup honestly never has smelly wind at all, unless he has eaten some cow poo whilst on a walk, and even then he has only given offence 3 or 4 times. I have kept him on Fish4Dogs which the breeder used. Notably it has relatively few ingredients. Our last Lab was pretty awful until we found a food that suited him, which was Royal Canin Labrador Retriever. What suits one dog may not suit another, and it is expensive and tie consuming to try lots of different things. It would be useful to you to find out which ingredient is causing the problems. There may be someone at your vet practice with specialist pet nutrition knowledge (not necessarily the actual vet, it isn't at ours) so that would be a good place to start.
4 month old Max eats Royal Canin Labrador Retriever for Puppies kibble - sometimes dry, sometimes with a little water, although I think he prefers it dry - 100 g three times a day. He also gets training treats during the day. He current weight is 13 kg. When he needs to take a tablet I mix it into a little bit of wet dog food (Carrefour brand) and that is when we have the gas problem. Max is my first dog ever and in the beginning I used to give him cow's milk which caused smelly gas as well as diarrhea. I quickly learnt that was not a good idea - thanks to tips from this forum!
