Luna is 9 months old and had been doing well in her crate at night until recently, she wakes early but always has as we all up for work but not in same days! But now when she wakes she barks and barks until you come, I have tried catching the gaps in barking so she doesn't think I have come because of it but now when she doesn't think she should be in there she barks and barks! I aam worried that she does it when we go out for short while and then the neighbours will start complaining! Any ideas?
Hi base28. We have a Luna too, but quite a bit younger! I'm sorry that you're having a tough time at the moment - I definitely find the barking the most frustrating part, especially when you know you're going to wake up to it - it's not a positive start to the day. I'm probably not the best person to advise because I'm really new to puppy ownership myself but we are also trying to get our Luna to like her crate. Rather than when she is already wound up in the morning, I'll sometimes wait until a point during the day (either when I'm working from home or at the weekend) when she's a bit more settled, and I'll try a bit of crate training - putting a treat in there and closing the door, stepping away and letting any barking subside then coming back and treating her when she's quiet, and repeating for about 15 minutes max. I don't know whether that's right or not but it might be worth a try - I can't vouch for its success though, as we're still working on it. Good luck though....

Thank you for the great replies, Luna goes in her crate between 9-30 and 10 pm every night and goes straight to sleep having done all her jobs before hand , she is quiet until between 4&4-30 am when she starts to bark, we let her out to do her jobs which she usually does then she comes back and happily goes back in her crate where we then go back to bed. After around 10 mins she then starts barking again and doesn't stop until we go back, should we leave her longer or are we doing something wrong?
We’ve been having the same problem with Ziggy waking at 5 since he was 15 weeks (now 18). We used to take him out for a wee when he was barking and he would go but under duress (had to stick a collar and lead on him to get him outside). He’d go back to bed for a while but it would end up in a yo-yo of barking/getting up every half hour. One day I got him up and just sat on the couch to see what he would do (he knows to go to the patio door and bark if he wants out). He got up beside me and fell asleep for 2 hours, turns out he just wanted a cuddle and he could hold his bladder until well after 7 the monkey! After that we made a rule that nobody gets up before 6:30 regardless of noise and spent a bit of time working on being quiet in his crate at unusual times during the day. Low and behold after a couple of days he’d bark once at 5ish then go back to sleep. This has now progressed to him sleeping right through until 6:30 without a peep. He’ll still come for a snooze beside me for an hour so I guess we could extend out sleepy time but it’s a really nice way to start the day so all good.
hmmm...so she has woken you up at 4.30am, initially for a wee, then finds it difficult to settle again, it also starts to light about the same time. So the need to wee may have triggered off the barking I would consider settling her in bed an hour later, so 10.30pm, then setting an alarm to get her up for a wee at 5.30am. If that works, add 5 mins every day or so, until she is waking up at a more social time I used this system with our last puppy and it worked well. I gave her a kong when she had a wee, and this gave us another 30mins in bed, and also broke any habit of barking as soon as she was back in the crate.
Hello, and well done Luna. Well done to you for waiting not easy I know. Have the neighbours complained? She might well do for a short while but if you give her something safe to chew on whilst you are out that could help her and you knowing that she has something nice while you out.
Yes thankyou lol, Luna always has an antler horn to chew on her crate if she needs it, and is always happy to go in her crate, it was just wondering how long is acceptable to leave her barking? This morning she woke slightly later and I had noticed that it was a little darker outside so was wondering if she was just wakes when it starts to get light? We have learnt what each of her barks mean so no which to worry about and what not too, but a few extra minutia in bed is more than welcome
How long did it take your 9 months old to stop barking at night. Ours has always settled at night no problem until there weeks ago and now barks several times a night. For what appears to be for no reason? Each times settles again for an hour or two.
