Hi, our gorgeous black lab Geoff is now 16 weeks and has had soft poos since we had him at 8 weeks. They are impossible to pick up without leaving some “evidence”. He was on Purina beta puppy, but having done some research thought he might be better on a better quality brand, so gradually transferring over to Pooch and Mutt puppy kibble. He’s having the recommended 100g 3x a day and looks very healthy and shiny with a nice waist. Does any particular diet firm things up a bit? Also he goes 3 or 4 times a day which seems ok in line with his number of meals? Thanks and sorry if anyone is eating right now!
I have a 9 week old pup and the breeder said that if he gets a bit runny just cut back on the amounts a little, might be worth a try.
I agree with @Mjd7568, reduce the amounts a little each meal. As you are still switching over, see how he goes when he is fully transitioned on the new food. I note it is a single source protein chicken, which is useful if he proves a little sensitive to that particular protein going forward. He sounds fit and healthy so it might just be playing around a little with the feed amounts.
Have to agree with the others...Soft poo normally = too much food. If it gets worse / more liquid / pooing more often than normal / signs of blood or mucus / any sickness or lethargy, then pop him into the vet for a check up. Hopefully just a little less food will sort him out. Good luck.
My friends Golden Retriever is alergic to chicken, took them a while and a few tests to find that out!. Our 14 week old lab has been on raw from weaning and hers are firm and easy to pic up (apart from an ice lolly "treat", won't be doing that again!).
Less food looks the way to go, he is certainly healthy and full of beans- or should I say chunks of my hands! Thanks all.
We had soft poos once when we increased his food as he grew. We just made the increase smaller and it settled within the day. My 16 weeker also poos 3-4 times a day.
Hi folks, I have a 7 mth old yellow lab, and from 8 weeks old, his pops have been troublesome. A few trips to the vet, testing with clear results equals head scratching! Small amounts 4 times a day, larger amounts 3 times a day, vet only diet food, soft food, dry food, mixed soft and dry, carrot - good to firm the stools .... tried it all. Have to admit, Royal Canin special dietary tins from the vet are always what helps with our pup. We normally get a pack of 3 or 6 and give him that, slowly introduce his dry food and it seems to do the trick for a bit. Nice firm non smelly poos. He’s still on royal canin dry for sensitive pups, and royal canin said keep him on it until he’s 1 yrs old but even now, he’s back to his old ways. We are slowly changing him onto ‘Burns’ food here in the UK, and he’s doing okay on it. Not firm like the royal canin tinned food, but getting there. Ahhh.... the life of a puppy owner...
