Mason and I went into back paddock minding on our own business and Mason looks under fence spots a tractor on the field and off he ran! I called and called and thank god he came back
That sounds familiar. When Pongo was a few months old he decided he wanted to run into the field and play with the combine harvester...
I know, my goodness it was! He is and he can also ignore me when he sees another person/dog! I practice many times a day works him and I on our own but when there are distractions it’s very difficult.
Yep. He likes things with wheels (the wheelbarrow, the lawn mower, the golf trolley). Those lovely big whirly blades were SUCH a lovely big wheel... Wish I could say he whipped back to me with a brilliant recall. Actually he sort of got a bit tired and it was a big field and it was a long way away and mum had chicken in her pocket and she was yelling a LOT and yes there was that chicken and well OK maybe he'd better go back and have some chicken. I aged about 10 years in 10 seconds.
It's such a relief when recall works in scary circumstances, even if it's really related to tiredness/chicken rather than training!
Gosh, a lucky escape then. Well it sounds like you tried and recall isn’t easy at all. Don’t you just love a bit of chicken. I’m relieved it worked and everyone was ok. I know what you mean my throat was very sore then the shock set in
Yes it was. I was certain that he wouldn’t come back, I called and shouted and I’m so grateful and relieved that he listened and came back.
How lucky that he came back! I had a similar situation recently, but it was only another dog he went sprinting after, all our practice with recall went straight out the window and I had to sheepishly go and get him. The experience has made me a bit reluctant to let him off his lead now though as the field we go in is right next to a busy road and I just don't trust that his recall is as strong as I first thought should, god forbid, he spots something across the road.
I know my goodness I was scared. And so relieved when he came back as you say if it had been another dog he too would have gone to see them and I too would be mortified going to get him. I’m not exactly fast. I totally get the on lead scenario as we have had few occasions where he runs to greet other people and or their dogs. Mason was playing with another dog off lead which was ok until a walker came along Mason jumped up twice and the man was.not happy and I too feel scared to let him off lead but I will try my best and do it in very short bursts till I feel confident again.
