We live in a row house (tall and narrow) with three floors. We're going up and down stairs all day, and of course our 12-week-old lab is following us, even just for quick 30-second errands up to the bedroom or bathroom, flying up and down the stairs. Is it possible for him to be doing too many stairs? Possibly bad for his joint development?
Never mind, I've done some more searching and found the answer! Probably best to try to limit his stair usage for a while.
Hee hee, yes you've found the answer! It is an issue. Having said that, you can't prevent everything. Our garden is on a 3:1 slope and when Pongo arrived (aged 10 weeks) his favourite game was to climb right up to the top and then FLING himself down the whole slope at about 50 mph. We couldn't stop him, and it was the funniest thing in the world. It doesn't seem to have done any lasting damage - we hope.... Welcome to the forum!
We also live in a tall narrow house. We carried our pup up and down the stairs every time we went up but by 16 weeks he refused to be carried. We had to put a stair gate at the bottom and he just wasnt allowed up any more. To leave the front door he needs to be on the other side of the gate and one day when we came home from our walk, I opened the front door and he took his chance and bolted up the stairs, leash trailing along behind him. He was very proud of himself! I carried him down and he fought so hard and tried to bite me that we were so much more careful to hold him tight when we came in. He used to wimper when we went uo without him but eventually accepted it!
We also live in a 3 storey terrace. Baby gates are your friend! Luckily our pup is perfectly happy to be carried most of the time. It's an opportunity to lick faces! We are introducing him to walking sensibly up to bed (1 flight, once a day). He is quite calm and sedate when tired. We plan to mostly carry him until he is too big. Which isn't far off for me.
