What brand of food are owners using my breeder had us using Loyal puppy and found small worms in it today, it is about half used and not sure this is the best choice anymore. My dog also vomited this morning not sure the worms had anything to do with it or not. I called Nutrena the company that makes the food and haven’t heard back from them.
Hi there and welcome to the forum . There are a lot of stored product pests that like to lay their eggs in dried food. This usually include various species of moths and beetles. The eggs hatch into larvae - which look like maggots, or short fat worms and are most unlikely to do your dog any harm if he swallows them. They are just added protein. Obviously check with your vet, but you probably shouldn't be unduly concerned. The main problem with stored product pests is that they can infest your home and contaminate food intended for human consumption. And in some cases damage furniture and fabrics such as carpets and curtains It is usually difficult to determine where the invaders got into the product. Kibble is heated to temperatures that kill the pests and their offspring, but occasionally a package gets damage in transit or storage and the pest gets in that way. Many homes also have a few of these creatures flitting about, and if an opened package of kibble is not protected in an airtight container it could even become infested in the home. Changing brands if your puppy is happy with it, may not be worthwhile, unless the contamination is very widespread, and occurred at the source.
