    Hi,

My Lab has also been diagnosed with paroxysmal dyskinesia. It has been interesting reading some of the similarities posted here. Following referral, my dog had an MRI and spinal tap to rule out any brain/tumour issue. These thankfully came back clear and normal and then the paroxysmal dyskinesia diagnosis was given. The element I find particularly interesting is Yogi's episodes are always when he wakes suddenly from sleep - the aspect the neurologist said was unusual, yet from reading here and elsewhere that is relatively common!

He was also tested for gluten antibodies which came back as elevated, moderate, so we are on a gluten free trial period - although that's been delayed due to ill advice received from his existing food company (a whole other story!).

Paddy, I would be happy to hook up and discuss further.

Comforting to read the 39% stat of spontaneous remission, fingers crossed!!!

    Jo

Hello, I have done plenty of research and have reason to believe that my 5 year old labradane "Duke" has this. his episodes began when he was about 2years old and now happen every 2 to 3 months (one has happened with a month between and the most recent was almost 4months - he had this one yesterday). His episodes are quite mild, they only last about 2min, and he usually lays down when they happen which seems to help with the leg spasms, he also twists his head and neck slightly and his lips crinkle up and pull tight. He appears to feel when they are about to happen as he will come sit near one of us just before the episode. I would love to hear your input on my research and if there is any way you can help me in confirming that this might be what he has. Thank you

    Hi Nikki
Sorry to hear that your labradane is having episodes similar to paroxysmal dyskinesia. I have to say that I have not come across PD in a lab cross. However, if you would like us to chat within private conversation - then I would be happy to do so, but unfortunately not within the next couple of weeks. This is a particularly difficult time for me as Monty sadly passed away very recently (aged 14 - and death not PD related). I will be continuing to try to raise awareness of the condition within the breed, and to try to help owners of dogs suspected of having PD - but need a little more time to come to terms with things right now. I feel sure that you will understand. Hope to speak with you at a later date - and that things improve for Duke.
    Good wishes
    June

Paddy, I'm so so sorry to hear about Monty. I found this forum and hoping you all can help me. My lab turned 5 two weeks ago. She had two episodes in January 8 days apart. The vet thought they where because she hit heads with another yellow lab when playing in the snow. Unfortunately she had another episode on Tuesday. The vet thinks she has epilepsy. The episode doesn't look like other seizure videos but looks just like paroxysmal dyskinesia. she has an appt with a neurologist the end of august but any help would be greatly appreciated. She was already on a grain free diet but I do give her mother Hubbard bones that are not grain free.

Hello, I have a dog that I believe has paroxysmal dyskinesia, am I right in thinking that there is someone in the U.K. doing research? I’m actually in the U.K. and would very much like to contact them

Hi Bery - sorry for the delay in responding - I have not been on the forum for some time. I am a little confused when you mention DNA results?
As to diet - I had to resort to a home-cooked diet because Monty had many food sensitivities and also chronic pancreatitis - so this made it difficult in addition to avoiding gluten

I am sorry to hear that your lab may have paroxysmal dyskinesia.
In response to your question - the veterinary neurologist conducting research into paroxysmal dyskinesia in labradors is Mark Lowrie (he is now at Dovecote Veterinary Hospital 5 Delven Lane Castle Donington Derby DE74 2LJ) Mark is working in conjunction with Laurent Garosi who is at Davies Veterinary Specialists at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. The veterinary pathologist running gluten antibody tests with a view to establishing whether or not there may be a possible link between PD and gluten sensitivity is Roger Powell of Powell Torrence Diagnostic Services (also at Hitchin in Hertfordshire). If you would like any further information - or just a chat - I am happy to help in any way I can.

My Labrador is having episodes the vet gave her epilepsy medication but it has not stopped the episodes. She is 18 months old Black Labrador, it always happens when she is excited and is normal within 2 minuets. I can tell when she is going to fall as her front legs go stiff and she kind of crosses them over in front of each other like a drunk person, then she goes off he hind legs, she will struggle to stand dragging her hind legs she does not lose consciousness. Any help would be very welcome.

    Thanks Sue Smith, and Miley.
