I am curious about how your dog got his/her name.

My family got a wonderful dog (2002-2015 RIP) and we kept the name that his breeder had chosen because it was a perfect fit. He was a part of the 'L' litter :)

Frodo on the other hand has two names. The one that his breeder chose ('I' litter) and Frodo which his trainer chose. Legally his name is the original one, but I don't plan on changing it.

I made a poll and tried to include as many scenarios as I could think of.

We've chosen the name for all of labs...

Callie - Her Sire was Calvin and her Dam was Izzie

Angus Demetrius - 38 years ago, when my Greek husband and my Scottish self were engaged, my father used to say that our first born boy should be named Angus Demetrius. Of course, we said "never". So, years later, as my father was dying, we got our little Black boy and named him in honor of my father. He loved it.

Kona of the Storm - Kona means the calm or leeward side of an island; Kona came home to us in October 2014 as we were still recovering from a tornado that had hit us in May of 2013; we were nearly done with the rebuilding and were eying the calm after the storm.

Dream A Little Dream - our Dreama. She came home in 2015, we were through the storm and beginning to realize a dream that had been 30 years in the making. Her call name is Dreama.

Raising A Little Cain - his Sire is Raising Cain and I loved him so much that I wanted to name his son after him.

DunRoamin' - Again, a nod to my late father; a retired Air Force member, he returned to his home town in 1990 and built a beautiful home on 15 acres - he named it DunRoamin'. Call name is Roamin'.

Great names and I think it is pretty cool how they each have their own unique story behind them.:)

    We chose Pongo's name.
There is a long story about how it ended up being spelled on his pedigree record....some of this forum knows it already.....

We decided on a chocolate Labrador and finding a suitable name caused some disagreements I was going after chocolate bar names and such like but my son pointed out you cannot call him that.
When in holiday still deciding my son came up with the name Mason and literally minute later in a builders sign it said Mason so Mason it is

Ooh, well Benson's kennel name was chosen for us, the breeder called him "Walter". He was never really a Walter!
I chose Bramble's nickname, and her kennel name, which isn't very inspiring but I only had a minute or two! Casper was CAS at the shelter, but his real name was Alfie. Interestingly he lived five and a half years as "Alfie" but wouldn't bat an eyelid now at the name, but has as whiplash response to anything else, including "sausage" "cheeseburger" and other names I couldn't possibly mention!:D

Monty's mum was called Tia Maria too!
All his litter were named after spirits too, I think there was a Bailey and possibly a Sherry.... Monty's kennel name was (Burbuja) Jim Beam.
We considered keeping Jim, but I have an aged though raucous uncle called Jim, and it just didn't feel quite right.

When he's in trouble he's Montgomery George Louis Mountbatten the third:D

    So.….picture the scene:

Me and other half have just come back from visiting the breeder, and have chosen our puppy (aged about 5 weeks). We've decided ages ago that his name is going to be Pongo (that's another story). We are celebrating having chosen our boy with a glass of wine...or two...or well, OK, maybe three. We have been laughing about the way some people spell their names in really pretentious ways (you know what I mean) and we're making up different ways that Pongo might choose to spell his name.
    (Hey, let's open another bottle...).
So round about then, the phone rings, and it is Pongo's breeder. She is calling to ask what we are going to name the dog. We've never had a dog before, and we assume that she is just asking so that she knows what to start calling him. So we say tell her "his name is going to be Pongo, but hey guess what hee hee hic hee hic hee hee we're going to spell it like this....".
And to make matters even worse, the breeder writes the spelling down just a little bit wrong, too.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why Pongo's official registered Kennel Club name is <breedername> Phongeuax.

Coco came with his name. OH is reluctant to change a dog's name so it stuck. Same with Scooby, but he did morph into Clootie Dumpling or The Cloot (he was a bit of a clumsy Galoot...Cloot the Galoot...Clootie...Clootie Dumpling ). Belle was a stray, we didn't know her name. She just the prettiest dog ever, so she got the name Belle.

Plum's kennel club name is Kentixen Sherry Topaz.
Her mum (black) was called Bea, her dad (red fox) Laird.
Plum was the first name that came into my head and, despite many other considerations, Plum it was.

Breeder name as a pup was Benedict (was the Pope litter) and he originally went to the home of a judge where he as named Judge. Well, this owner judge discovered lab puppies are a lot of work and energy so he brought him back to the breeder. Since we were first on the list for the next litter we were offered Benedict-Judge. We weren’t quite ready for a puppy yet but when Fate yells at me, I listen. So at 10 weeks we brought our Tonka (little yellow truck) home and he’s been my bestest buddy in the world ever since. Wife suggested Tonka and I immediately said, YES!

Chewie's kennel club name is Phenwick Royal Magic. Chewie is short for Chewbacca, mostly so that when we get around to having human children my OH doesn't try to name them after Star Wars characters!

Lucan - because his breeder named all the pups after the legend knight's of the round table. Lucan's KC name is Belvedere Nootkatensis, not very inspiring for a pet name, so we researched the other knights and came up with Sir Lucan, King Arthur's most loyal knight.

Ash - Well the letters are in his KC name Colmershill Altostratus, it suits a black dog and we've several Ash trees around our paddock.

    My previous dogs :-
Bracken - From the books by Sheila Hocken about her guide dogs, I was reading them at the time. It also seemed very fitting for a liver & white Pointer bred to hunt the moors.
Gypsy - a rescue so came with it.
Arnie - My son was watching an Arnold Schwarzenegger film when we arrived home with the pup.
Rosco - A character from The Dukes of Hazard.
    Prince - I really can't remember why.
Duke - Named after the black Lab I grew up with.
