Quick simple question (I hope). We’ve been fortunate enough to have been given two crates, one kind of medium and one large. The medium will be perfect for our pup and the large for when he’s older. Question is, is it best to put him straight in the big one? Or get the use out of the smaller one and work up to it?

He’s been in a large one with all his siblings at the breeders, so he’s used to it, but I guess it will look a bit barren when he’s on his own. I just don’t want him to refuse the larger if he gets used to the smaller (it won’t be big enough when he’s an adult) what does everyone think? Thanks

Hi there, doesn’t seem that long ago I put Mason now 1 in a large crate with a divider but didn’t end up using the divider as I put his bed and couple of comforts in there and it looked just right.
He very quickly looked right in the large crate

You don't say how old your pup is, or whether he is potty trained. The ideal behind the small crate is that they don't want to go potty where they sleep. If the crate is too big, the concept may not work. Once they are potty trained, it doesn't really matter if it is bigger than necessary.

Hi sorry, got ahead of myself as I’d posted another topic explaining the situation... he’s only 8 weeks old, we pick him up this week, good advice on the potty training thank you, think we will give the smaller crate a go at first.

I've been using an XL (116x77x86 cm) crate since day 1. I was using divider at first, but he wouldn't go in. So I took everything out, put in an old towel and water bowl. He started going in by himself a minute after.

My dog has had a 48” crate (thats like XL) all her life and we had no problems, however we dont lock her in it, she goes in there whenever she wants. If your dog isnt toilet trained i suggest the smaller one as they wont wet their own bed.
There is a very low chance he will not use the bigger one when he grows up, just make sure to put all the same stuff in it and basically pretend its atill the smaller one
