Hi everyone, long time Labrador lover here, had lots of friends and family with labs and always wanted one along with my children, and now my wife has finally agreed and we pick him up next week. They are a local breeder so we have been fortunate enough to visit 2-3 times a week throughout! Anyway my question is, it’s a foxred, red father and black mother, there were I think 4 red and 2-3 black, but ours just looks yellow. We aren’t bothered as the pedigree history is very good, kc registered etc, but was just wondering if they go darker, or if it is possible that ours is just yellow? The other red pups are quite red. As I say it’s fine by us either way, just wondering, I’m sure I’ll be posting plenty of questions on here, thanks in advance...

Lighting does make a difference, he looks very light in the second pic, first is around 4 weeks, second is around 8.
Hi and welcome to the forum! I have a fox red puppy too, and like you, my pup is not quite as 'red' as he could be. If I had to describe his colour, I would say it was more of a golden or toasted yellow. Our breeder assured me he would get darker as he grew but at 6 months now I'm seeing no difference since I first picked him up. Personally, I hope he doesn't get any darker as I really like him exactly as he is!
Gorgeous either way! My yellow was very light when we got him but his coat darkened quite a bit as he got older. It has lightened a bit in the last few weeks (he is now 9 mths) as some of the coarser winter coat has come out.
Awww, lovely little pup, whatever you call his colour. My girl is brown, usually described as chocolate. Couldn't care less about the colour, all that matters is the dog and how much you love him-her. Would be delighted with our Molly even if she was sky-blue-pink-with-purple-spots
I have a fox red (technically a yellow) and she’s the same at 8 months as she was at 8 weeks. I’d heard that the color around the armpits is indicative but I don’t know if it’s true. You can see bits of lighter/yellow in mine but mostly red.
Hi there and welcome! There’s no official definition of how dark a lab has to be, in order to be called fox red, so it’s all a matter of opinion Either way your little one is absolutely gorgeous!
Hi I'm the same my new little man is 4 weeks tomorrow, deep fox red sire & dam is black but the breeders looked back through her history & there had been a few fox reds in the past too. Kyko on his last pic looked really light like almost cream with a dark face & paws so he may darken but if not I don't mind at all really. Could have been the lighting that made him look lighter as I have only been able to visit once as 3 hour drive away I'm relying on pictures until I can make the journey again. Yours is gorgeous as are all labs to be fair
Thanks so much everyone for all the replies, what a wonderful resource, I shall be here quite a bit I imagine..... yes as I said, I am not fussed on colour, most importantly he seems really healthy and full of character.... Bigger than all the others and definitely the alpha male, think we are going to have our hands full!
Same ours was first born and was bigger than the others but his belly!!!!! Crikey looks like I'll have to watch his weight he was gaining around 100grams a day! I have some pics of their first taste of proper food & he was lying in the bowl stopping anyone else getting theirs looked like he was trying to suffocate himself
My boy was from a black dad and a blond yellow mum. there were three like him, a little blond girl and 4 black pups. The owners kept the girl who stayed a lot lighter than my dog.
Luna is a fox red lab, now 10.5 months. She has gone slightly darker and her ears are quite a bit darker. I love her colour. We’ve had black labs before Luna, 2 of them. Got to say Luna has been the easiest to train and her temperament is brilliant. We still have a black lab and they are best mates?
Our fox red is from two fox red parents and he was quite pale at 8 weeks. Our breeder told us the tips of the ears are a good indicator of how dark a shade a pup will go. Wilson had quite dark tips and he did indeed get a lot redder as he got older and now at 11 months is quite a deep red. I can't upload photos unfortunately but when we look at his baby pictures and later ones there's a significant deepening of colour. We think he's a beauty!
Our Honey's 5 momths old now and getting darker, we were told she'd end up the shade of her ears as well and can well believe it. There's some pictures of her on this forum.
I went to visit Kyko yesterday and his colour is darkening or at least maybe he just looked lighter on the photo's the breeder sent me. He's 5 weeks old tomorrow, as you can see is getting distinctively fox red. Could be darker I guess but I think he's lovely just as he is Post deleted by our mods team.
