Rufus (14months) ate a small piece of jellyfish at the beach this morning. He immediately vomited and was extremely drooly... cue a visit to the vet. Whilst waiting to see the vet he began furiously licking his paws, he must have been stung there too as well as chomping down in the jellyfish. The vet examined him, took his temperature and administered a steroid injection to help stop any swelling (although none seemed present) as well as an anti sickness injection. She thought he had gotten off lightly and should recover well. When we returned home he continued to lick his paws, so I cleaned them with salty water. He eventually settled and slept for an hour or so. He was quite happy to go for a short walk on awakening and he managed (devoured!!) a small meal. He’s been his usual self up until just now when he’s settled for a sleep and he seems to be bothered by what sounds like little hiccups? Almost nasally if that makes sense?! Any advice? We’d usually go for a run/walk now before his dinner. I was planning on a leisurely walk and the vet said to feed him tonight as normal? Are there any scavenger lab parents out there who’ve experienced this? Thanks in advance, Trina
Hi Trina, No experience of this one myself but it sounds horribly worrying for you at the time! Your vet seems confident that things are going to be fine, but there is nothing wrong with giving them a ring again if you have any questions or concerns I'd probably skip the walk today just in case his paws are still a little sore, but I am notoriously over cautious! Hope he's feeling better soon, let us know how he gets along.
Thanks We went for a short walk to a nearby park and had a wee play...it’s pretty rainy here and thought the wet grass wouldn’t be too sore. He seems fine, I think his throat is probably it rather irritated and sore from either the vomiting or the sting, and that’s why he’s hiccuping/coughing a bit. I gave him a drink at the park, and we’re home now. He’s just bothered the life out of me for his tea and seemed to enjoy it. Typical lab! Will keep an eye on him and hopefully he’ll be back to normal soon xx
