Hi our lab is nearly 14 weeks and we’ve had him for 3 weeks now and he’s settling in well. The little problem we have at the minute is that he’s really biting and nipping everyone at night time and we can’t seem to calm him down. In the day he is sleepy and will let people stroke him and cuddle him but when it gets to about 7 at night he will jump from sofa to sofa and just nip and bite everyone in site! Anyway know why it’s at night and not daytime please?

Hi, Sounds like a case of the zoomies....my pup gets them around 9pm and she is 5 months old...runs around a breakneck speed, nipping at everything. I find that putting her on a time out (crate) for 10 minutes helps to calm her down. I didn't like the idea of crating my pup at first, but decided to follow Pippa's advice on this and glad I did.

Night time Zoomies, happy hour, mad hour, what ever you want to call it! Very common, in fact almost a given from what I’ve heard. Buddy is really good during the day but loses it a bit pretty much the exact time you’ve said!

We’ve tried letting him let off a bit of steam, a game or something, at least if he’s running he’s not biting. Or I do a bit of high value treat training, find a new chew toy, smear some treat or cheese over a piece if antler or nylabone to keep him occupied and to calm down a bit. A frozen plastic bottle, frozen cloth, mix it up, keep trying, look for the signs and you can minimise things a bit.

Sorry that was a bit of a barrage of different things to try but you’re not alone, there’s so many things to try out, you’ll work it out I’m sure, and there’ll be plenty more advice to come, we are still learning ourselves!

Hi just to say i agree exactly with what's been said already and just a tip,our pup did the same every night and we sat one each end in our hall and practised recall with her, this really tired her out!

Things will really improve,my pup is 27weeks now and only has the zoomies a couple of times a week

    The witching hour!

My pup was like this every evening for what seemed like forever- I knew when the time was coming and my stomach would sink. I have a video of her charging about the lounge like a whirling dervish, grabbing on to anything that she could get her mouth around; sofa legs, throws, magazines from the magazine rack, the rug, me, my son! She would take flying leaps from the floor and onto the back of the sofa. She'd struggle under the sofa and trap herself, she'd jump jump jump all over us.

Nothing much helped, it's very common lab puppy behaviour but we used to have lots of different chew toys to place in her mouth instead of our hands/arms and would give her time out in the kitchen if it got too much.

It started to calm about 16 weeks.

Thank you for all your replies, this is exactly what Milo is like. My 2 daughters dread this time of night with him as they are normally the ones he likes to chew! I will try all the things you said and hopefully it will calm down soon.

Oh my . We call this "hell night". Ours is about 6 to 7 pm. He does circles around the place like the Tasmanian devil. We just try to stay out of his way. Eventually he drops and takes a nap then we're ALL ready for bed at 8:30.
