Hi all, this might be a bit of a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question, but I just wondered if any of you might know how long it could take to notice a slight upset tummy, and from what? It’s very frustrating. The reason being..... Buddy is fed raw (sorry mango) and 99% of the time his poos are great. Just once or twice he has had one runny one, then straight back to normal. Now, this is not a problem, but we are trying to introduce new meats, tripe for instance is very good, and other things that contain probiotics for the gut etc. It could still be a little soon I suppose (he’s 13 weeks) but with raw it’s a bit different from changing a brand where he would need to get used to the difference in manufacturer. So I’m not ‘changing’ his food, just adding a bit to it, mostly because of a higher quality product available with less fillers. So when we add something like duck for example, we just introduce small amounts, same with a different treat, but it’s so difficult to know if that could cause a slight upset. Then I don’t want to avoid that meat thinking it’s that which has caused it, but could be absolutely anything, like something he has picked up etc, he sampled his first bit of poo the other day, yuck (although I think he spat it out). Apologies if it’s a bit of a silly question but just wanted everyone’s thoughts, Like if we introduce something new, and 24 hrs later we get a runny poo, is that too long for it to be that, or not long enough, just as an example, thanks!
Don't apologize, it just proves my point. I don't know how it is with other dogs and I don't remember how it was with Mango when he was that age. But I can tell you how it is now. I started mix in yogurt in one of his Kongs, and noticed his next poo after having that Kong was runny. So it didn't take him long, 6-8 hours I guess. But it is a different case, it is not just introducing a new food, it is yogurt, and a lot of dogs are lactose intolerant.
Have you tried yoghurt again? And has Mango been ok on it? I mean like (similarly in my case) it might take a few times for them to get used to it? It doesn’t just go for the raw diet, I guess I’m asking regarding anything, yoghurt, eggs, treats..... could it be that they might be a touch loose until they get used to it? I have been using it for a week now. And only in one Kong and just a tablespoon or so. It has not improved. So I just stopped. It is not vital for him to eat it, so it doesn't matter. And yes, when it is new food, it could take him time to get used to it. That is why I tried a few times with yogurt. Otherwise he had only had runny poo when he ate chicken and developed an alergy which is common in dogs. Also beef. I changed his kibble to fish first, and he has not had one until now. I don't just have 1 Kong, I have 7 . Or...Mango has them.
I need more longs having only recently finding the best thing to put in them and realising what a godsend they are!! I’m wondering if buddy struggles with beef also, he had an upset tummy with some beef treats, and also I think there may be some beef in some of the new food we gave him, I’ll need to check the ingredients again, thanks
As long as you're not constantly having soft or runny poos, and as long as you don't think there's an ongoing 'thing' causing the occasional runny poo, then I wouldn't over-react. Puppies have often only been used to eating a limited number of foods with the breeder and when they go to new homes, they experience new foods for the first time. Just as if we went to India and had a spicy curry, we'd probably see the results soon, but people in India eat curry every day with no probs - it just takes the dog's body time to adjust to processing the new food. My thing with runny poos is that if they are happening at roughly normal times of day or quantities, I'm not too worried. If they are happening every 20 minutes, resulting in accidents or I'm having to get up many times a night, then something needs to be fixed or changed. I wouldn't recommend milk or yoghurt for dogs. Cheese is fine, but milk and yoghurt often results in runny poops....
Thanks Jo, we’ve had buddy 5 weeks and it has literally happened around 3 times, and when I say 3 times I just mean 1 runny poo in the afternoon and then a normal poo the next day, and one of those times was after his jabs. I just wanted to introduce more variation in meat and fish to his diet, but a slow approach is needed I guess.
I’ve always believed pups transition quicker than adult dogs. Cupar was eating the same foods as Cassie within weeks. Runny poo with mine is usually me giving too much offal.
I wouldn't worry about a slow approach, I just feed anything and everything and when I finish one flavour chubb I move onto another. Then I'm using various things for training too... 3 runny poos in 5 weeks with a puppy sounds pretty good to me, I don't think you've got anything to worry about...
