I took my 13 week old black lab on her first partridge hunting trip today. After cleaning the birds she got a hold of a wing. She ate the entire wing. I'm worried about her being able to pass all the bones and feathers. If anyone has any info that would be great. Thanks
Hi and welcome! Considering that my dog (along with a ton of others) eats chicken or turkey necks and wings, passing the bones shouldn't be a problem. However, I do wonder if there are any diseases/parasites to worry about that may be present in wild caught fowl vs. their unfortunate store-bought cousins. Lots of gun dog experts on here, maybe they can shed some light?
Blimey! Has your puppy any symptoms you are concerned with? Vomiting, coughing or any lethargy? Straining to have a poo? If not the puppy should be OK, I would be more concerned if it was a pheasant wing as they are larger with longer primary feathers. Maybe just give the vet a call and ask whether you need to bring your little "savage" in!
She seems ok. She was dry heaving a bit this morning. She had a pooh when she woke up, no feathers or bones in it yet
Just keep an eye on that "dry heaving" hopefully not a problem and the feathers are transitioning through the gut and not other way round
Up her fibre by adding cooked oatmeal to her food for 24 hours (or longer if you feel the need). We have always done this any time our dogs have gotten an unsanctioned bone. She should be fine but you'll need to be on guard. IF she refuses her meals where she had not done so in the past, a vet visit is in order.
