Hello Labrador owners, I am picking up my chocolate lab puppy in two days (insert shrieking violins.) I’m going crazy over food and treats. I’ve heard and read plenty of horror stories about Blue Wilderness (gave 24 pound bag away.) also chicken jerky from China. One treat, dog is dead the next day. Here is an inventory of the treats I have. Input would be greatly appreciated. Blue Dog Bakery grilled and cheese training chews. (Contain glycerin, some glycerin is petroleum byproduct. BUT labeling does say vegetable glycerin.) “I and love and you” (weird name) Contains glycerin, label not more specific. Feel good reassurances “grain free, limited ingredients, nothing scary.) Blue Health Bars baked with apples and yogurt. Contains oat, rye flour, plus tocopherols (preservative?) Nature Gnaws bully sticks. Florida company, sourced from Argentina and Brazil. Sticks are made in a USDA inspected facility, baked, BUT treated with irridation. Also have Three Dogs Bakery and Zukes treats coming. Zukes May use glycerin. Main food, Wellness Core puppy food for large breeds. Any input on which of these are good and safe for my little Mochaccino? Thank you.
Hi there, and welcome to the forum. Look forward to hearing all about your new puppy in a day or two! There is a comprehensive article on puppy feeding over on the main site. Have a read through and shout with any questions. Most breeders will give you some food to take you through the first week or two and it's a good idea not to make any changes to your puppy's diet until they have settled in a little, as upset tummies are common in the first days Here's another article you might find helpful: What To Expect From Your New Puppy. Good luck and let us know how you get on!
Thank you for the reply. I have read many articles on puppy/dog nutrition, but I was looking for feedback from someone who was familiar with these brands or else which ingredients to avoid. I’ve been through feline diabetes before, so I am pretty strict on what I feed pets. I am in the no grains camp mostly. At least no corn/soy, and NOTHING from China.
??? As in Bernard Herrman's Psycho??? It's not going to be that bad.. Why not try apple as a treat? Organic. Labs love apple. Not full of suspect chemicals. If get tired of apple, then move to banana. Or carrot.
