Willow is now 13 weeks and is happy to go out on walks. She tends to jump up at my hubby when on the lead but heels when told and given a treat then goes back to jumping up him. The other issue is she sees something on the pavement and it's in her mouth usually stones. Not sure if she swallows some before I take them out of her mouth. When she is on grass on a flexi lead she is tearing grass up in chunks. When in the garden she constantly looking for stones we have gravel and it ends up in her mouth even after I have swept the area. Can I stop this or will she just grow out of it. She is a lab lol
Hi @WillowA Please see my instructions on how to teach your dog leave it contained in the thread below. You need to be able to tell your rock eater to leave it. Don't take things out of her mouth. Lincoln was horrible with eating things . I taught him "Drop it". I always have treats in my pocket. When he takes something in his mouth he shouldn't have I put a treat in front of his nose and say "Drop it" . Works every time..
Thank you I will do this. I use iams for treats but too many give her the squits so I had to hold back as every time she went to toilet outside she was getting a treat. She is still young so any different food upsets her so I am sticking with the iams but not too many.
She is excitable as only 13 weeks so everything is new to her. I will look at the link. She does drop the stone for a treat then as soon as she has ate the treat she goes right back to looking for stones.
I use the word trade and it works for us if he has already picked it up or something he shouldn't eg a fallen sock from the pile. If i see something he does I say leave it and 9/10 he does this and carries on walking. If he does have something he shouldn't once traded I remove when he focussed on our trade or move forward so unable to get it. We play "trade" during games eg tug as recommended by trainer so word is familiar. so see it doesn't always vanish away never to be seen and comes back to play. Socks for example he regards this find high value and no kibble parts it and requires high value treat eg chicken to part - too clever sometimes! He hears the word trade and unless eg sock he does drop and awaits trade. My trainer did say never fake trade and dont offer the trade as will lose all insentive.
She was biting the lead so I told her to drop, then gave the treat. I tried it with leaves she had in her mouth and she dropped them for the treat. She went in the garden picking up mud and stones and dropped them for the treats. On the walk home I stopped her from snuffing the ground as this is when she grabs stones she walked nice on the lead so was allowed to sniff being watched all the time. She learns fast it's me that needs training lol
I have this problem, it's made me hate everybody in my neighborhood. People who throw trash/random crap on the ground are THE WORST. I used to think we'd all gotten the message on littering but I was sadly, sadly mistaken.
Another issue is dog poo I don't want her running in it or eating it. I hate people who just leave it or bag it and throw the bag away. I don't let her go near other dogs now as the last one growled at her the owner told it to "be nice" meaning my dog could turn on yours. Another was barking and pulling to get at her I don't want her scared of other dogs.
I can attest to this. I never realised just how disgusting the general public was until I got my pup, the amount of litter I find on the ground is astounding! We're just back from the park now and Gimli found a used teabag. Are people honestly brewing tea in the middle of open fields now!?
I guess they are popular picnic food. But it isn't really picnic weather!! At least not here in the UK - @Michael A Brooks may be getting some sunshine!
I wish it made that much sense, @pippa@labforumHQ. So far I've found them just on the sidewalk in a neighborhood or along the street. It's like people are eating them in their cars and just tossing them on the road (along with their bottles, cans, wrappers, and other general car refuse).
@pippa@labforumHQ Plenty of sunshine and bushfires. In common with @R Lewis we seem to be plagued by the same ill-mannered behaviour. The other night I walked past a car and there was rubbish from McDonalds dropped on the ground directly below each window. There were 4 individuals in the car. The neighbourhood has broken glass from beer bottles over the footpath. When I'm with my dog we have to walk a zig zag pattern to avoid the shards. Paradise lost.
