We purchased our girl at 10 months old from a reputable midwest breeder. She breeds for show or service. We are so delighted with "Symphony", we call her Symee. Her mom went on to be a service dog and her dad is a grand champion. She has not had her first heat, she turned 1 on 12-30-2018. We are going to spay her after she completes her heat. What is the correct length of time to wait after she is done to schedule her spaying?

    Hi @Miranda

She sounds impressive. Just curious. Why was she 10 months old rather than 2 months when the breeder sold her?

There is a good deal of debate about the optimal time to spay, some arguing to delay the decision for a few years.

Here's a start on some of the debate. https://www.thelabradorsite.com/neutering-your-labrador/

Is there any specific reason why you are going to spay shortly?

Our vet said it would be okay a couple of months after her first heat. Our breeder said she may have her first one as late as 14 monhts. I guess we thought that would be okay if it was that late. She was held back to be a show dog. The breeder had her scheduled for her first show and wanted to wait to see how she did in the ring. I am them one who approached the breeder and asked if she would consider selling her. She showed well, was a little timid when first entering the auditorium. The breeder has a two other puppies she is working with, as well.

thanks for the update. She was trained as a show dog. You don't have any problems getting her to sit?

Have a look at the information. It's not imperative that she be spayed after the first season.

Yes, she learned pretty quickly to sit. She was trained to stand and back and wait. Those commands come in handy as well.
