Hi, I had a male 11 month old black pedigree lab. He died suddenly yesterday. He was healthy and had no medical problems. He was fine an hour or so before I found him. I found him still warm when I returned home... despite the cleaner having just left. He was in his bed in a natural sleeping position with his mouth shut. I tried CPR and then picked him up and drove him to the vets 2 minutes away. Ran with him on my shoulders with pooh and wee all over me through the vets...They gave him adrenaline and air but he was dead. We had an autopsy last night and the vet said there was nothing obvious. No instructions or anything except breakfast in his tummy. He did have a marginally enlarged liver, but no other signs. No signs of blood clot in his heart. We’ve opted for a histology examination. But we’re at a loss and confused. It’s half term and we have two children, 6 and 8. It’s hard to process and my personal ordeal finding him on my own was horrendous. Does anyone have any idea what this could be????? Please help. It’s a pretty awed time.
Oh so sad to read this. How heartbreaking for you all and difficult to process. I have no experience of what could be the cause but there must be something significant medically. Hopefully the histology will provide some answers which will help come to terms with your loss. Our dog died recently and I have 2 primary school age children. We all cried a lot but found comfort from remembering the happy times and we have planted a little garden for him. We all go up and see the bulbs growing and chat to him it helps us all. It’s not easy so be kind to yourselves and try to keep busy at half term.
Hi there, I am so very sorry to hear of your awful experience. Sudden death in a young dog is very shocking, and thankfully rare. I have experienced this once with a dog the same age who died from an aneurysm. But there are almost certainly a range of other causes. I do hope you get some answers to help you understand this tragedy. My heart goes out to you and your poor children.
Im so sorry to hear this. I would be devastated just as you are. One of my friends had a similar unexpected, unexplained death of his 2 year old Lab. She was an active trained hunter, apparently in good shape. She went to bed one night and did not wake up in the morning. I don't think they ever found out what caused it.
I don’t have any suggestions to make but just wanted to express my sympathy for such a horrible and distressing experience. What a devastating thing to happen to your beloved boy. I’m thinking of you and your family. I hope you get some answers.
I'm so terribly sorry and I hope they found out what was wrong. My heart breaks for you. Prayers and hugs.
I can't express in words what you and your family are going through, I'm so sorry to hear this awful news and hope you somehow find peace soon. X
My 7 month old female lab puppy ran in front of a car during a play session at the doggie run near our house. The car was speeding and killed her instantly. Her death was very traumatic and sudden. We loved her so much and she was not with us Long enough. Please watch your dogs near the roads. Lucy dog 24/9/19- 13/4/20.
My sincerest condolences. To some people, it is almost as bad as losing a close human family member. Please know that you can and will find another companion and that your pup will be waiting for you in Heaven. God Bless you as you work through this time of grief.
Hello Oly, I hope you're doing better these days after your loss. I lost Snowbell, my 12 1/2 yr old Lab 2 days ago. I woke in the morning to him laying by my bed with labored breathing, incontinence (he had peed) & struggling to get up. I called the Emergency Animal Hospital & they said bring him in. I got my son to lift his legs up & Snowbell started walking to his water bowl & drank. We were getting ready to get him in the car, when he saw a dog on the sidewalk & barked, but only once. We were driving & telling him to hold on because the Animal Hospital was only 12 min away. He was leaning against the back seat at first, then he started slumping down slowly in a laying position. My son is calling him & I'm telling him, "We love you! Mommy loves you!" His eyes were open & his body limp & we knew he was gone. We were 2 min from the Animal Hospital. Vet thought maybe an underlying heart condition or murmur. It's strange because he was his normal self leading up to that morning. Although, he seemed more needy than usual the night before. I dunno...I'm still in shock & keep wondering what happened & could i have done more. He hadn't seen my son in 6 mths due to College & was able to see him those last 4 days of his life. He was sooo happy.
We have just lost our 10 month old black labrador pedigree. We bought him to give us all a lift after my husband died aged 50 and then our dog passed away 2 years later aged 13. Other tragedies have also happened. Our new puppy was so beautiful and super intelligent. He weighed 35 kgs so was going to grow up to be a big dog. We loved him to bits. A couple of weeks ago he had a small fit lasting about 30 seconds. He was well foe the rest of the day. My son works late shifts and put our pup to bed at around 2 am. Wirhin 5 minutes he started to howl. We ran downstairs and tried to revive him but he had died. We are absolutely devastated. We didnt have autopsy done because that won't bring him back. We think he has had aneurysm or massive fit. I researched epilepsy and it can be hereditary but we will never know why. I'm so sorry to hear you lost your 11 month old lab. So tragic for you all. Sending hugs to you all x
