Hi can anyone help, Isla has always had a slight discharge from both her eyes. My vet said their was no infection and it didn't seem to be bothering her, which it wasn't. But today her right eye seems more red than usual and is discharging more than usual, Isla doesn't seem bothered by it. A friend said her vet recommended her to bathe her spaniels eye with cold tea bag?? Has anyone heard of this or should I make a vet appt?
I'd guess people are steering away from this to avoid giving medical advice. I won't give any medical advice, but i will tell you what has happened with Captain, his eye discharge, and our vet. Captain gets a slightly yellow mucous-like discharge from his eyes. It isn't always when he cries, it isn't always in the morning after waking up, or any other event or time we can directly connect. It doesn't seem to affect his vision, the appearance of his eyes, his behavior or anything else. Captain is 7 months old. He has had 2 or 3 ear infections in each ear, and it is not from the water play that we do. Well, it doesn't seem to link to that activity. He has always been scratchy with his ears, licking his paws, and chasing his tail. These behaviors are much more common when his eyes have larger levels of discharge. We have taken Captain to his vet for several check ups for these indications, and it has ultimately been addressed as allergies. The symptoms and discussions lead us to believe it's not food related, so that leaves weather/environmental allergies. Since commencing his treatment we have noticed a decline in all of the symptoms. Like humans, sometimes it seems the allergies will not be defeated and these symptoms return. They are much less severe, though. Ultimately, i would talk to your vet about it. There is a really large pool of options to address allergies whether they are food or seasonal.
Hi thank you so much for your informative reply. I hadn't thought about allergies at all and I've got a vet appt booked for Monday morning so i can discuss this with them. Fortunately Isla has not shown any other symptoms such as itchy ears. It may be that she has an eye infection,I've just bathed around the eye with cool boiled water to keep it clean. I hope Captain continues to improve and thanks for your help
Tilly had droopy lower lids like a blood hound. She often had gooey eyes, and we treated them periodically. She also had chronic of yeast and bacteria ear infections which did respond to meds. We always thought she might have a food allergy, but were never able to pin it down, despite a lot of dog food trials. Neither eyes or ears seemed to bother her as much as it bothered us.
Thank you ,Isla also seems to have slight droopy lower kids and has always had quite red whites of her eyes. Our vet has given her steroid eye drops and we go back in a week for another check up
Sometimes, at this time of year, there can be a lot of pollen and allergens around in the air and many dogs will get more eye discharge as a result - there tend to be more boogers in the mornings, for example.
Hi there. A little late to this thread but actually came on looking for pups with eye issues. We have been going through it with our almost 7 month old since spring began. Been through many courses of different eye drops etc. Her eyes can be so red and droopy at times. Third eyelid sometimes covers much of her eyes. Her eyes have been checked by the vet several times and to be on the safe side we even took her to an animal ophthalmologist. He checked for all things and in the end it said it is definitely allergies. at first I thought it was tree pollen but pretty much all that is gone now and we just had a REALLY bad day with her eyes looking just horrible again and I saw that the MOLD spores are Extremely high. It all makes sense as we have had a really rainy spring and I am sure thats whats been causing it. Anyway. the specialist did say that it may just be this bad this year as she is a puppy and her immune system isn't fully developed. I do hope that is the case!!
