Hello, just wondering whether anyone can help ... our 22-month-old fox red Wilson never chews his food. It's all just swallowed whole (kibble). We are in the process of moving from an all-kibble diet to introducing some wet food alongside kibble, but I'd love to find a larger size dry food that Wilson would actually chew/crunch. Does such a thing exist? I'm in the UK. Many thanks.
Does it really matter? Cooper eats her kibble so fast I'm not sure she chews it much. Tilly was the same way.
Thanks - probably not and I'm probably over concerned but I've always thought it weird he doesn't crunch any of his kibble and I've thought he really should have more chewing activity. He has quite a sensitive tummy so I can't give him many food type things for chewing and I'm always a bit reluctant to use things like antlers so I thought at least if he had to chew his main food he'd get a bit of jaw exercise! If you have any suggestions for good chews that wouldn't upset sensitive tummies I'd be veru grateful.
That's the way dogs eat. They don't chew it's grab and swallow. If you're worried about him eating to fast get a bowl which slows them down or scatter feed.
Dogs dont chew kibble. if you're worried about cleaning teeth or eating too fast feed some meaty bones. Try lamb necks or ribs - I get them free from the butcher or Morrisons usually have them for about 2£ a kilo.
Thank you - we do have slow feeders, food puzzles and I scatter feed so I'm happy with his eating speed (he would wolf it all down without), I was just concerned he should be chewing more but I'm feeling more reassured now thanks
Thanks Ruth, I didn't realise dogs just didn't chew kibble so that's reassuring. I do clean his teeth every night with an enzyme toothpaste but we also give him bones occasionally. And we use slow feeders, puzzle toys and scatter feeding to slow him down so it sounds like I've been worrying over nothing which is always good to find out! Thanks.
My dog didn’t really chew his kibble either. Then I started putting pumpkin powder on it to regulate his digestion and it actually has helped him eat a bit slower. Maybe that can help with the non chewing issues. Worth a shot.
Thanks for that - I didn't know you could get pumpkin powder, what a good idea. We have used pure pumpkin puree which seems to help with digestion but something sprinked on his food might make him chew it. I'm starting to think I'm worrying unnecessarily and as long as he has the occasional bone to chew on he would be fine. I'll have a look for pumpkin powder though - sounds simpler than the puree. Thanks.
Here's the link from where I get my pumpkin powder. https://www.rawpawspetfood.com/pumpkin-powder-digestive-supplement-p/suppump-8.htm If it doesn't help him to chew slower, it still helps with digestion, so I would say it's still beneficial. Good luck!
That's great, thanks! I'm in the UK but I'm sure I can find something similar here. Thanks very much.
