Our 6 month old puppy was recently diagnosed with Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in his hock (ankle). He was seen at UC Davis and they recommend surgery to remove the loose cartilage and then his ankle would be in a fixator for at least 3 months while healing. The surgery is very expensive and they say he will still have arthritis in that ankle but the surgery will lessen the amount of arthitis. Or we wait and they predict he would need his ankle fused at 1-2 yrs old due to pain from the OCD. Only other option is weight management, meds, therapy etc but the vets said his ankle will become very painful in the next few years. This started at 3 1/2 mos old with limping. He's been on previcox and is doing well now, does not appear to be in pain most of the time. Surgery is expensive and has risks and will cause some arthritis, doing nothing will lead to pain at some point and arthitis.... Anyone else have a puppy with this condition and what treatment did you do? What worked, what didn't? Thank you
Hi, I know this is an older post but our 12 month old lab has just been diagnosed with OCD in his ankle too. Can you let me know how you got on? Did you go down the surgical route and if so, was it successful? Would appreciate any information you can give on your experience.
