Hi guys we pick up our beautiful golden lab on Sunday! His name his pies he is a gorgeous little boy. I’m just wondering what are your must haves for a little puppy? What would be your shopping list or what was your shopping list when you got your puppy Look forward to hearing from you all! Thank you Teide
Congratulations on your new pup. Our little man has been with us for just under 2 weeks and I would say the Best Buy we had was the crate. Also lots of chew toys as these little puppies are crocodiles in a cute outfit!! Enjoy every second with your puppy!!
Congratulations on your puppy too! What’s his name? How are you finding it? I’m so excited to bring our boy home! We have ordered a crate as we plan to do crate training with him I’ve bought some kongs and chew toys does your pup have rope toys? A colleague told me an awful story about their dog having a rope toy and swallowing some of the rope ended up with a trip to the vets which has worried me abit.. but I’ve also seen they are fab for chewing and playing. Thank you for your reply
Our puppy is called Zeus! He is beautiful and I adore him. I must confess I did get the puppy blues a few days after getting him...I knew they were known for being very bitey but it did take me by surprise at the level of it especially towards my children. However the more I have spoken to people who have had labs and the more I have read on this lovely forum the more I realise it’s a normal phase and we will get through it!! Zeus does have rope toys....I think as long as you keep an eye on them and take away any toys that are damaged then hopefully it should be ok. Are you all set for your new arrival?
Awh what a lovely name! Yes I have read into the puppy blues I’ve tried to educate myself as much as I can and be prepared for him possibly being a little terror but I suppose no amount of reading can prepare you they all have such different personalities! I’m glad you’re feeling better I imagine he is going to test us. I think I’m ready I’m so excited we’ve got our large puppy gate up, all the food and treats bowls, beds etc just wanting to make sure I’ve got everything I need ready for Sunday
Hi and welcome from me and Isla my choc lab,18 months. How exciting,it's brilliant having a puppy but exhausting, try to catch up with sleep when you can, housework can wait,as i found the sleep deprivation the hardest as if your tired it's harder to cope. Good luck and have fun!
Ah ah thank you so much!! Yes luckily I have my partner to help as much as possible too! We can’t wait to get him home with us! I will most certainly catch up on as much sleep as possible thank you!!
Awh I’m such a photo taker! I love holding onto memories. I have about 20 photos of him I took when we went to view him! My partner wants to get a canvas made from one of the photos Thank you so much! He doesn’t know how loved he is already!!
These are the toys I have for him so far and also another puppy pack of toys. I’ve just spent the morning organising them and taking off labels he’s also got a little toy box
Im not sure if they will have anything but the breeder we had gave us a soft toy that had all the brothers and sisters smell on it and I put it with her when she slept and she often went and got it to lay with. You could also bring something to kind of rub around? anyway... best of luck. Remember that everything you do when they are so tiny will be what they want to do when they are bigger. Also I thought I had a handle on the nail trimming but I wish I tapped her nails every day (I felt like I did often but not often enough) she is so tricky to trim her nails.
Hi thank you for your reply When we viewed him I actually took a blanket with me for him to keep so that when he comes home to us he has something that smells like mum and brothers and sisters to help him settle in! He was 1 of 11 pups so I really think he will Miss them lots! I think I will leave nails to the vets I think I’d be too frightened to do them. I’m a big believer in this being his home so with supervision to start with I’m happy for him to come up on the sofa and the bed eventually it would be lovely to have trust in him to be able to roam freely in the house but I do know it’ll more than likely be years before that trust is there but I’m willing to put the work in for my boy
Aww he is a lucky fella! Just like our girl, lol. Don't know if your going to but we were told to cover the crate with a blanket as this would make pup feel safer and cosy. Also we had her crate beside our bed and when she cried during the night we would put a hand against the crate for her to sniff and reassure her. This worked with our pup.
Our puppy is just over 12 weeks, the last 4 weeks have been crazy but amazing! I would say get yourself a good enzyme spray as there will be times he will not make it outside or to a mat. If he starts to smell it on the carpets then he will start going to the bathroom in that spot. For teething another good idea is to get face clothes and rope toys, soak in water and freeze. That way when you give them to him they will be cold on his gums and nice to chew on. Another thing for the teeth is carrot, we usually cut it into a 50g chunk and hold it while she eats it. It is cold from the fridge, hard and edible so a win win. I see you have a likimat and it is honestly a life saver. Sometimes when we want 5 minutes we put puppy peanut butter and banana on it and it keeps her happy and quiet! Dried cow ears are also really good, our little one can sit and chew on these for a good 30 minutes quite happily. You seem set with all the toys for him, only thing I would suggest is a crate divider as if he has access to the whole crate then he will use one side as the toilet and this will make toilet training impossible. Hope you enjoy your bundle of joy!
Thank you so much! I did think we should put a blanket over the crate so thank you we will defo do that! We are going to put the crate in our bedroom for a week or so and then move him to the kitchen if he’s ready too I can’t wait to pick up my boy tomorrow! I will most certainly spam photos of my boy! How old is your girl? How have you coped? I’m nervous but excited
Thank you so much I can’t wait! How have you coped over the last 4 weeks? I’m very excited but so nervous! I wasn’t sure if he was allowed to have cow / pig ears but I will defo get some of those today! I have heard carrots are good to give them for teething! Good idea with the spray I will defo do that! Luckily downstairs is hard floor! Upstairs is carpet though so will defo get a spray as you’ve suggested! How have you found toilet training? Thank you for your reply! Teide
Hi Teide, how did it all go picking up your boy? I was very excited to pick up Isla and I had a lab before so I thought I knew what to expect! Boy was i surprised! Isla was a bundle of biting, chewing and mischief!! You've probably read on here about the puppy blues and even though I desperately wanted my girl I suffered with them,I felt out of my depth at first, so don't worry if this happens, it does pass. I would say just try to relax and enjoy your boy they are not puppies for long,Isla is now18 months. Post pictures of you boy for us to see. Good luck
Hi thank you for posting! It was lovely we were so excited! Hi thank you for your reply! It was so lovely I’m so happy to have him home! Yes he certainly knows how to be a monkey that’s for sure haha! We’ve been redirecting him with toys when he chews something he shouldn’t or tried to play with his mouth with humans! He has such a gentle mouth but we still redirect him with toys.. I don’t know if he will continue to have a gentle mouth but hopefully we can make sure he does I’m so tired! I knew I’d be tired but wow I’m done in haha! I go for a night shift this evening so my partner had his first night alone with him and I’ll miss them so much but I’ll be happy to have a full nights sleep I did a lot of research before we got him so I was prepared for the worst. I didn’t realise just how much attention he would need.. I knew it would be mega amounts but I can’t even have a wee without him crying for me but we will work on it How is Isla doing now ? Thanks teide and pies
