Hello, our girl Starfish is a one-year-old brown lab. She had a pretty bad injury on one of her hind legs tore a tendon and is still in recuperation, in places where she has been prodded and poked and at one time had a scrape from the cage the hair is growing back all white. Has anyone experienced this could just be some type of undercoat and then the brown coat will grow on top or is this some type of trauma related hair growth thing going on. Honestly I'm not bothered by it I'm glad she's doing well and that she's healthy but we are curious because she now has white spots on her side.

Hi and welcome! My dog had an injury from hiking (a bad scrape) on this back that grew back white. It stayed that way his whole life. On the other hand, he also had one ear ripped about 1" in from another dog attacking him but after it healed the fur was just as black as ever. So maybe something about the scrape that damages the hair follicles and in some dogs that means it grows back in white?

My black lab had an extensive injury and infection to a toe and part of his foot. He nearly had to have an amputation. all the skin and fur came of in that area. We weren't sure if the fur would grow back it did eventually and it was white and stayed white. Sorry I don't know if they will grow brown in my experience scar tissue caused white hairs to grow.

Yes, I'm starting to see that. It's been 3 months since the injury so I have a feeling it's permanent. Thanks for responding!

Wow, I see that there is a trend here. It's been 3 months since the injury so I have a feeling it's permanent. Thanks for responding.

Yes, that can happen. I was pleased to see a couple of scrapes and punctures Oban got came in black but one of them did get a few white hairs a few years later, prematurely.

I always thought for Brogan it was his little badge of courage from us getting stuck on a hillside together in a bunch of thorny brush. I have my own version from the adventure. So maybe now Starfish has her own hard-earned battle scars to be proud of!

Hi! Just wondering how long it took for the hair to grow back. My 6 month old got bit by another dog. It was just a scrape but removed all the hair. It's only been 2 weeks but just curious if the hair will ever grow back at all. Thanks!

I think it makes sense that if the skin is damaged the hair may grow back a different colour. Toby has had many bits shaved over the last few months and they have all grown back the same fox red apart from his head! He had half of it shaved to remove his ear and now has a line down the middle of his head with dark fox red one side and a lighter shade the other. I am hoping it will eventually all settle to the same colour but if not it looks quite distinguished!
