My pup will be 5 months old in 2 weeks. She has color dilution alopecia (she's a silver I know the controversy) that is starting to show symptoms on her back legs. I took her to the vet to make sure it wasn't a skin infection or anything like that. It isn't.

Her vet prescribed 3mg in the morning and 3mg of melatonin at night. Also with dietary changes and adding things like coconut oil and salmon oil to her diet.

I've given melatonin to an older dog for anxiety but have never heard of giving it to a puppy.

This is a new vet so I don't have that trust built with her.

Is it safe to give her melatonin at 4-5 months old?

Not quite the same but I had a dog with Alopecia X and I know it’s often used with that. with limited results. However sadly, most cases alopecia are pretty impossible to treat. I have no experience of it being given to puppies but they use it in children to aid sleep, so can’t be too harmful. Good luck.

It started as a spot on her head a little tiny spot and then her armpits and belly and finally her back legs. I did a bunch of research in forums and groups and all of that and started giving her raw goats milk and everything but the back left leg and right knee have grown all of the hair back.

I am going to give it a try and see how she reacts to it.

Yeah I let her breeder know.

She responds well to what I've been giving her. The hair that grew back is thick and soft and has so far shown no signs of falling out again *knock on wood*. But her back legs are being stubborn. It's not a huge amount but it's enough to be like hmm why does she look like she has white patches on her leg and knee. She does have a slight intolerance to chicken which was probably exacerbating the problem. So she's being switched to a fish-based food.

I did indeed read the article.

I don't have any advice, but wanted to offer my sympathy.
    What did her breeder say?

Her breeder has been giving me suggestions on how to handle the hair loss.
