    Hi all,

I’ve got a 9 week old black lab called Jasper. We have just been holding him on our knees when in the car but he is already getting too big for that so now I’m looking for a car harness so he can sit on the back seat. Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Hi Sianellen,
I have an 11 week old lab named Hunter and we use the Kurgo Car Harness https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009CBTTNM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

He has been great and calm in the back seat with it and i have piece of mind knowing he is safe in a crash. I got the small, but will have to upgrade in the next couple of months. The best thing is, you can use it as a walking harness too. Straight from car to walk to car again. Super easy! Hope that helps!

Hello and welcome. I love his name. I had a Jasper, it’s a terrific name for a dog. I sadly don’t have any recommendations as we have always put our dogs in the boot, but just wanted to stop by and say hello. Enjoy your Jasper :)

I don't have any recommendations either, my dog hated the car harness to the point that he refused to get in the car and would bite my hand if I tried to connect the harness. I bought a dog guard to close the gap between the front seats and a 'hammock' which keeps the seats clean and stops him falling in the foot well and he loves going out in the car now. That might be too much freedom for a puppy though. Maybe a travel crate to go on the back seat might be a solution til he's a bit older.

I use the Sleepypod Clickit harness: https://sleepypod.com/sport
Pros: very well padded, durable, well made, crash tested, dogs are ok with it, and adjusts a lot meaning you won't need to buy the next size right away
Cons: the first few times it's awkward figuring out how to thread the seat belt through the back straps.

Although it has loops for a leash I wouldn't use it for walking a dog, or at least not my dogs. The instructions say to allow 2 fingers between the straps and the dog (before the seatbelt is fastened) and this means it's too loose for walking farther than down the drive way.

As for sizing I cheaped out and bought the large size for Maggie who was 8 mo thinking she would grow into it, which she did. I had difficulty using it until she grew. My older dog was close to the upper range of size large and it was perfect.

Kyko hated the seatbelt attachments that went into the seatbelt connectors so we now have a kurgo zip line set up alongside the kurgo easy fit harness & he doesn't mind the car now as he doesn't feel restricted anymore. They were both pretty reasonably priced & we bought them off ebay so even cheaper than going direct to Kurgo. The only modification we made was to add a swivel connector so he didn't get tangled up when turning round, but again this was a couple of pound from ebay
