We need some advise. We lost our 12 1/2 yr old black lab a couple months ago. We also have a 21 month old black lab. He is really missing his big brother. We are now considering not super soon but near future maybe getting another puppy. I don't really know if that is wise being our pup is only 21 month (he is neutered). Is it best to get another male or should we get a female? I would prefer a male but I have heard so many things about males not getting along. Can anyone give us any tips advise on this? I should say that our other lab which was a male 12 they did great together, our older lab was a very mellow english lab, our 21 month old is an american hyper guy. The only issue we had that happened only twice in the 18 mo they were together was our puppy growled at our other dog when I was getting their breakfast. Never at any other time. I don't know if that could be a potential issue. Thank you I woulds really appreciate some advise on this. Thank you

Hi So sorry to hear of your loss, we lost our lovely boy on 19th Dec and I am looking for another as I am lost without a dog. I took on my Daughters Labrador for a few months after her working regime changed and he would have been left too long at home, I separated them at feeding time, but the biggest thing of all was walking them together to establish the pack bond, the younger dog would wear my older one out play fighting so I used to give them time out by putting my daughters in his crate and let my dog curl up exhausted in his basket next to him - this was perfect as there was no separation anxiety and my Daughters Dog was used to being in a crate overnight as he was like a Beaver eating chair legs !
I also never favoured one over the other regarding attention or giving any treats - and always fed them at the same time but in separate rooms.
Hope this helps, good luck with your Quest for a new puppy, its a minefield out there, so do your homework, looking at hip/eye scores EBV scores and breeding Coi. to make an informed choice.
I will not go and look at any pups until I have screened the health checks -as its almost impossible to walk away from a labrador litter without choosing one . :)
