Hi, I'm new! Christy from Missouri. We have a 7 month old chocolate lab that has diarrhea all the time. I'm not sure what we're doing wrong. He's eating non-grain puppy chow. Could we be giving him too much food? We give him about a cup and a half morning and evening but it just goes right through him! Any help is appreciated.
Hi Christy, Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear your pup has been unwell What are your vet's thoughts, have they ruled anything out yet?
Christy, could you check the ingredients listed on your puppy chow and the nutritional percentages? In my experience- I am not a vet-, I am not a canine dietician -but in my experience you don't want to feed a high protein feed to a growing dog. Some of the grain frees are higher in protein. I did volunteer work as a Lab foster for a couple of years, as David Poole suggested, we found it was best to feed the younger dogs food that contained rice. If a Lab had diarrhea issues, our rescue vet did have us try Pepto Bismal (for some reason no knock off brands) to firm up their stools. Check with your vet who also might want a sample to check for a parasite issue.
With a young pup especially you should get him to the vets to find the cause. Probably as simply as diet change but might be campylobacter or Giardia which needs treating. With regards to a grain free diet. http://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinar...rtain-diets-and-canine-dilated-cardiomyopathy Let us know how you get on.
