Does anyone let their dogs sleep on their bed? My puppy is 3 months and he has been sleeping in his crate outside my house ever since I got him (which is about 3 weeks). He isn’t a really affectionate one, he doesn’t like cuddles or being touched really. Also he loves sleeping in his crate, other places seems like a playground to him, he doesn’t even want to lay on the couch. But he has never peed in his crate and sleeps through the night, and recently he has finally laid next to me. Should I start let him sleep in my bed with me or wait until he’s older?
I always felt it was better to avoid sleeping in the bed due to separation anxiety until they are older have their own space.
When we first got Luna I slept in the living room with her until she was big enough to get on and off the bed herself without being hurt. We were going to crate train her, not let her in our bed and keep her in a crate at night, guess what ... we caved as she hated the bars but also she was just to cute! I didn't work from home so the separation anxiety was okay for me as she knew I went to work and came home again. She wasnt that cuddly with me to start with but because it was just the two of us at night she started to cuddle in more. Now she is just a big softie who loves a cuddle n belly run!
If I had a choice I would prefer that Cooper slept on her dog bed in the bedroom, but she normally prefers to sleep on our queen sized dog bed. Be careful what you wish for.
Luna starts off the night on the floor next to me but I am guaranteed to wake up with her either at my feet or cuddled into my side (normally out for the count on her back!). If I put a bed or blankets down for her she will dig until they are out the way and sleep on the floor
I couldn’t sleep with Toby on the bed he takes up too much room and snores sometimes. OH is bad enough on that front! I often go up to bed early to read and Toby comes with me. As soon as I want to sleep I send him back downstairs to his bed in the kitchen. That little backward glance as he trots down the landing tugs at the heart strings though!
Billy the Maniac kips on my bed, I usually dont encourage it but I needed to build a strong bond very quickly with Billy as he suffers from very bad outdoor anxiety. He now comes to and takes comfort from me and is easier to calm instead of going completely curly wurly cuckoo. Blind Dog Bruno kips on his own bed cuddling his fave t-shirt and gives off a "do not disturb" vibe...
Know that once you start it will be very difficult to get him off. As they get older their dreams bring annoying body movement, they snore, and they take up space. If you're a light sleeper he'll be loving it but you will be miserable. We allow our lab up for cuddles but he knows once the lights go out he's in the corner on the floor. Everyone is happy.
They don't all snore. Tilly did, Ginger and Cooper did/do not. Cooper is pretty good about moving when you ask her to. Seems to understand that we need some space in the bed also. It's a good thing, because she weighs about 75 lbs and is 24+ inches tall.
True, Billy doesn't snore, I think he has bad dreams though as he'll wake up crying and crawls into my arms for a hug. Bruno on the other hand, sounds like a gnu being throttled by a crocodile and gives you a real snotty look if you wake him up. Then he'll chuck a fart in your general direction and go back to sleep, I think he takes after me
