My 5 month old Silver Lab Puppy has chronic diarrhea. Nothing is helping. We have treated him for worms and he is now negative but the high fiber diet, probiotic and metronitizole is now not working. I am terribly frustrated as to what this may be. Does anyone have any experience with this before I spend another $300 on tests?
Definitely worth getting a specialist's eye on. I know slippery elm helps with diarrhea and pumpkin. But as far as what's causing it that could be a whole range of things.
It could be Giardia? The suggestion on here seems to be to treat with Panacur and if no change the vet can send off 3 consecutive stool samples to see if present. You can buy Panacur over the counter. Just make sure you use the Giardia dose as it’s higher than for worming. Failing that what do you feed?
We tested for Giardia. He was negative. My vet is going to put him on a Hyrdrolysed Diet along with Tilan?? for 2 weeks then if that fails I will end up taking him to an IM specialist. I am finding that this is a very difficult problem that we have not been able to figure out. Any other suggestions are welcome and thank you for your suggestions and will follow up with that.
Sounds like your vet has an action plan. Presumably Campylobacter ruled out too? Hope you get it sorted soon.
Sorry to hear about your puppy's tummy troubles. Caring for a puppy with chronic diarrhea can be really challenging. I hope your vet finds a solution soon.
@Jeanine Hurley do you have more details in terms of - when it started (has there ever been normal poop?), dates and duration of symptoms, what's been tried (dosages, for how long etc) any improvements in response to anything tried and so on.... I've had some challenging times with problem poops with my dogs and maybe something useful to add - I know how tough it can be for the humans in the household and holding your breath to see what's coming out...
