My family has been on a waiting list for over a year for a black lab puppy. The breeder is very reputable. However, we are being promised a black lab but both parents of the litter were posted and they are both yellow. We have a deposit down and can’t get our deposit back unless they can’t provide a puppy. I have read multiple articles and everything says two yellows can’t make black. We aren’t totally opposed to yellow, more so just feeling we are being promised something that is not possible. Thoughts? Is it possible there could be a black puppy?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

You're absolutely correct that two yellow Labs can't throw black puppies. I'm not sure if you need another article to read, but this one explains why it's genetically impossible.

A reputable breeder should be happy to refund your deposit, or keep you on their waiting list for a litter which does include black puppies.

I don't know if there's any precedent or convention for breeders offering a discount if they can't provide a promised color. They might have picked the sire because he was the right choice in every other respect (health, field titles, inbreeding co-efficient, etc) and compromised on color to secure those other things. In which case since you've been on the waiting list a long time they might be willing to accept less money for a yellow puppy as a gesture of goodwill. However if they're not making a profit off the litter, then they might prefer to return your deposit and offer the puppy to someone else at full price instead.

I'd be interested to know if any of our members have experience of this!

To help you weigh up you options, the homepage of our main site also has links to articles about all three colors of Lab.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Thank you! The dog is for my husband. He lost his dog about two years ago now and absolutely had his heart set on a black lab. That is what he had growing up. He was so devastated when he lost his dog that it’s more that I want to make sure he gets what he wants and we are paying a decent amount of money for the puppy. We also have two little kids who have been waiting very patiently for a puppy. So I just don’t want them to be disappointed and I know enough about dogs that as soon as it was two yellows my senses perked up. Thank you so much for confirming my thoughts. He will have to decide if he wants yellow or if we will be starting over.

I would think not, but in the last week at work, every yellow lab that came in has been laid back, and every black lab has been bouncing off the walls.
